Cost of motors????

Ok I have a 1982 evinrude 7.5hp and was thinking of selling it. Its in great condition all the original paint and no flaking paint on the block or head. It runs perfectly And ussally starts on the 1st or 2nd pull. I was wondering what a good and fair asking price for this motor would be????<br />The reason I'm thinking of selling it was cause my freinds dad has a 1983 15hp johnson he is selling it hasnt been used in years ans has aproximatley 100 hours on it. He is quite anal though and took it in for service and tuneup every year even when it just sat in his garage. It runs great. He told me I could have it for 450-500 bucks with a new 6.5gallon tank and hose. This seems to be a good deal to me but was just lookin for other opinions. I'd like to sell mine for the cost of this one so there would be no out of pocket expense to me......LoL....I'm cheap!! What do ya all think????

I'd say either of those motors would be a steal at the price you are talking about! But what do I know?

Go to NADA.com and you can check out what it thinks the motors are worth for your area. The only other comparison would be to check your local want adds or ask a dealer.

Yeah I found a link to that nada.com on the web and tried it. I dont think they know what there talking about they said if its in excelent condition it worth 120 bucks!!! and the 15 hp is worth like 140!!! I know there worth more than that!!

NADA is a starting point. Along with info. from want adds, for comparison of the going rate that motors are being sold for in your area, you can use it as a multiplier. Example,if nada says your 7.5 is worth 100$ and the 15 is worth 140$ while you see a want add for 400$ for a 7.5 then you may have to pay an additional 40 x 4 or 160 for a 15 hp 83. Just subjective. This also depends on checking the motors our for compression etc. It's what the market will bear.

Howdy, SF.<br /><br />I suggest you not use insults like "anal" unless you are a qualified shrink and know exactly what it means.<br /><br />You would get the best price for your engine on Ebay. The price for the 15 sounds excellent.<br /><br />Go for it.

Ok thanks I thihnk I'm going to see if my neihbor wants to buy it for 600 if not then I might see about putting it up on ebay at 600 starting bid or whatever they call it. And let them run it up from there. Some of those people on there dont seem to care how much it is as long as they out bid the next guy!! I tried getting a gps there last year and some of these guys would end paying more for them than they could go to the store and buy one for!!

When you put it on Ebay make sure the motor is clean and shiny with good pics.<br />Take pictures of it running in a barrel or wherever with the water pumping out the hole.<br />I wouldn't start it out at $600 because that is to high. 1980's Mercury 9.8's go for $500 max.<br />I would start the motor out at .99 cents. Believe me you will get alot more people bidding on it and you will get a higher selling price than if you started it out at around $400.00.<br />Just like you said people get in a bidding frenzy and end up paying way to much than what an item is worth.<br />When you start it out dirt cheap you get more people bidding on your item and more "suckers" in the end.<br />If your not getting the price you want you can always end the auction in the last minute.

Hmmm, I think I will have to review last post regarding Ebay.<br />First of all be sure you describe your motor as close to what it is, especially running conditions, nobody likes to buy something is misrepresented, and it can get you introuble fast.<br />Second, price is relative at what you would like to get, but you cannot start at $ .99 and end auction if you have bidders, it's a sale and you will be forced to sell at price listed unless you put a reserve price (where you don't have to sell below the price), otherwise it's a binding contarct (IE if motor is at $ 200 and I'm high bidder, you end auction early with no reserve, I have the right to get motor at $ 200).<br /><br />Study Ebay rules before listing.<br /><br />Val

You could start your auction at .99 cents. This way the listing fee is only like 30 cents. The higher you start your bidding at, the more you will pay for the listing.<br /><br />As for ending the auction early, you are allowed to if the item was lost or stolen, or you no longer want to sell your item. All you have to do is state in your auction that the item is listed locally in your local newspaper, and that you have the right to end the auction early if you sell it locally. I have done this before, and there are no rules against it. Good luck.

There is a '81 7.5 on eBay now at $410 with 17 bidders and 2 hours to go and one sold on june 9th for $505.

Hmmmmm, I guess the $1100 I paid for my '92 Evinrude 15 longshaft electric start about 5 years ago was too much then? It was through a dealer( ), so I knew I was paying a premium, but couldn't find a decent one from a private party in my area for much less. Used as a kicker, hopefully she'll serve me for years to come!
