so i spent all winter working on my motor, and next winter i would like to tear out the floor stringers and transom and replace them. but with all the lumber and fiberglassing, how much would a typical 16 foot boat cost to do that kind of rebuild? im just looking for a general number, nothing specific. Thanks

Re: cost of new stringers/floor/transom?

Hi PmDavis,
I have redone 15 and 18 footers so far. Both got the full treatment (complete gutting and rebuilding). I didn't keep accurate tallies, but the 15-footer cost me about $1200 and the 18-footer about $2000. That includes trimming it out with carpet and vinyl, too. And both were like new boats when done. Can't buy a new boat for that...

what about just bare bones. only glassing in and buying wood for the stringers transom and floor, no carpet, nothing but the essentials

carpet and vinyl will have to wait another year, which is why im not interested in that cost yet

I am doing a 17' Chris Craft. As of this moment, I have about $800 in it. Here is a list of where the $ went in terms of the stringers and deck:

5 gallons resin
4 yds cloth
4 yds .75 mat
4 yds 1.5 mat
4 yds 24 oz roven
5 yds cloth
3 ea sheets 1/4 ply
1 ea sheet 3/4 ply
2 ea 2 part 2 lb foam kits (kit is one gallon each part A and B)
Gloves, pales, acetone, throw away brushes, roller, misc. small stuff

If required: Include extra cash to keep the wife happy (dinners, etc.) :D

Of course, your actual costs will vary......

Re: cost of new stringers/floor/transom?

depends on how cheap you are...!!!!!

websters defines the word boat as....a hole in the water you throw money into...it also says boat is an acronym for Bring Out Another Thousand

there are some really good tips for buying materials on this forum.....

resin is not cheap

you can scab ply from any where.

erikg has posted a fantastic way to get glass cheap. read his comments here.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=239211

do you have the tools?.....boats eat grinders......(i buy the 20 buckers with a warranty and keep returning them)

proper safety equipment is 70 bucks AND CANNOT BE IGNORED
paper dust masks will not work...(if you cant afford the safety equipment, you cant afford to do the re-fit........check out this thread

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=235651&highlight=minimum+safety+equipment

foam....$200 check out this link for cheap ideas.

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=233479

do you have a place to fix it?...if not, a shop is 450 a month.
100-200 hrs labor

$2000 is bang on the button if you buy all new.

$500 would be about right for being really frugal......but it takes a while to amass the materials...

cheers

My list is LONG and EXPENSIVE, near $2500.00 when complete, maybe more.

Keep in mind; I had no idea what I was doing so
So I just throw money at it.

But still better than a used boat likely with the same issues.

The Man-Hours are another subject all together, you gotta-wanna!
