i was wondering how much approximately getting the carb on a 2003 johnson 25hp would cost. done at a marina. i was taking it on sea trial today and it kept stalling out unless it was choked out. even after getting warmed up and fiddling with it. i talked to a buddy of mine who knows all about outboards and said that the carb needed to be rebuilt. the fuel was old the guy said and it was a very rich mixture. im not sure if i want the boat/motor/trailer if im going to have to pay alot for the motor to be fixed.

Carb is just routine maintenance.
Btw, that's a nice looking rig you got there. enjoy!

Try new gas first - there may be nothing wrong with the carb.

Re: cost of rebuilding carb

I would have to think hard about aboat and motor, that the seller ,chose to put to sea with a potental buyer in poor running condition. What else has he neglected to do.By now ,the impeller and gear oil need to be changed if it was laid up long enough for the carb to become tarnished.Going rate for an outboard shop is about $100,an hr.Pulling off the carb ,total disassembly, put back together and install, then run the eng ,sync and link ,figure an hr.and a half, thats assuming nothing goes wrong. Then parts on top.If your bringing it in for a carb.I would highly suggest an impeller, gear oil and lube. You want the engine back in perfect running order, this way ,the mechanic cant say,you only said carb etc.I would TELL THE SELLER.Get it servced with an impeller job ,then sea trial.I bet the impeller was never changed. He is not going to sell it to anyone running poorly ,UNLESS,a buyer comes along with knowledge and knocks him down on price based on the repairs it needs.Bottom line,if you really WANT THAY SETUP.Bargiin hard.its going to cost a few hundred by the time a shop is done with it

i offered to contribute up to 50$ for the motor to be fixed and iasked him to change the impeller. im not going to pay 100's of dollars for a carb
he already changed the lube oil himself also. i told him to get a reciept also.
