Re: Cost Of Tilt Motor Replacement

i have seen them for 90 dollars.

the work is not difficult.
you tilt up the engine manualy, support the lower unit so it wont fall down on you.
take the portside transom bracket armo off.
you will have to take transom mounting bolts out on the portside.
take of steering linkage.
remove the bolts that hold on the ptt unit punch out the pin that holts the tilt cylinder.
remove unit and replace the motor.

i would say a 2 hr job

Ive done two on the same motor 1995 150 - All you have to do is tilt it up. Support it. Remove the upper pin, tilt it out and and install a new pump.
No biggie . Hardest part is removing the pins. No need to remove the transom bolts or steering linkage.

Tahts prpbably a fair quote. $200. for the motor - a dealer wont discount it; and $200 in labor. It's a two hour plus job.

The only way to make it less expensive is DIY.

It least it aint break'n out another thousand!

Is it possible to get these motors rebuilt (like you would a starter or alternator)?

be carefull on some engines with the trim all the way raised and you remove the pin that holds the engine to the ram the engine can flip 180 degrees the other direction you need to use a piece of rod bent on a 90 degree angle on each end and then placed between the engine and the transom bracket to stop the engine from swinging in either direction. be care full make the rod and use it Bob

Flipping over is a possibility. I place pipe between the top of the midsection bracket and the motor bracket let gravity have its way and let it sit there.

A motor shop I'm sure could re-build it but usually corrosion is the reason it breaks and the rebuild shop will not have extra motor casings laying around.
