Coughfing Johnson!

I have a 1998 Johnson, outboard, 250HP, Carburation on a 1999 Hydra-Sports 24.5 Vector Series W/A. The engine takes a little while to start-up and at low RPM's it starts to cough and shuts down. When it's running at high RPM's it doesn't seem to have a problem. Yesterday I had a hard time docking in my marina since it kept shutting down. Any ideas on what it could be?

This is known as "lean sneezing" which is a lean condition. Try adding some carb cleaner to the fuel or remove carbs and have them cleaned and install kits. Your idle mixture could also be adjusted. My bet is you have crud in your idle circuit of your carbs.

Thanks for your quick response, and please excuse my ignorance, but how can I check the proper idle mix, and which Carb Cleaner do you recommend. I'm going to change the spark plugs and cables as well.
