Could I have found the problem?? Ok as many of you know, I have been trying to figure out why I couldn't turn 4k RPMS at WOT on my 87 classic fifty 45hp on my 17ft bass tracker with a 13 pitch prop. I was out in the garage and was looking to make sure at WOT my carbs was opening all the way and they was. But here's what I found, I found that although my throttle lever was all the way forward and carbs open all the way my trigger was not up against the stop. I had a zip tie that was hanging up not letting it advance all the way to the stop. I cut the zip tie and now it has full travel. I can't wait to try it on Wednesday. Do you guys think this could be it?

You didn't have full advance. Maybe and lets hope so, Spill.

Full advance matters. On larger engines timing moves from around zero, give or take, to about 20 BTDC. When you are coming off WOT, a thing Merc called "back drag" allowed the carburetor linkage to start shutting the butterflies but kept the spark advanced. That amounted to a very small drop in speed but a reasonable reduction in fuel consumption. You will notice a difference. How much depends on how much advance you had and how much you have now.

Mine did this same thing. Ended up being the stator. just topped out at 4000ish rpms. Had to do a running check on the stator to find the problem. Now I am back up in the high 5k range running WOT

I have 2 Mercs that I ran for at least 15 years at and above the upper limit....5800-6000. They loved it!
