I just bought a 71 Johnson 85hp and I was just wondering some things about it....

Model #85ESL-71A

What should the compression be per cylinder?
Is it an electric shift motor?
Any opinions on it (?generally)

I'd be hoping to see 100 psi per cylinder, nothing above 125,or below 85.

Yes electric shift. ONLY use premium blend gear oil.

And it would be good if the readings were within 10% of each other....

The seller said that the readings were at 120-125psi accross all four. Sounds good to me!

Could someone explain the electric shift to me please?

Premium gear oil in the lower unit?

basicly theres solenoid is the lower unit that shifts the gears, instead of a shift rod that runs down to the lower unit. the solenoids are activated with electricity. there is a special gear oil you use with electric shift motors. unfortunately these are hard to get serviced, as there are not many mechs around that know about them, and parts are hard to find. Paul Moir and Joe Reeves are the gurus of electric shift here on the forum. i hope you got the remote control when you go the motor, you really the the engine specific OEM manual for that engine.

The controls are definitely coming with the motor.

Could anyone point me to the right gear oil? Can it be found locally?

Also, If anyone has a link to the correct manual for the motor as well.

Thanks guys!

its type C gear oil. It will say on the bottle, for use with johnson electric shift.. you can find them at NAPA, Canadian tire, or any marine shop..

I have the same motor as yours.. to test out if the gears were working, i did use regular auto tranny fluid, Dexron III / mercron .. which worked!
then i went and bought type c gear oil before testing it out on the lake.

Alrighty Cool!

The person I'm buying it from owns a Marine shop and is doing a water pump housing and impeller swap on it and sending it full of fluid. I asked him about the "special" oil and he agreed that he knew what it was. :)

How do you like the motor? Have you had any problems? Anything else I should know? Think $330 was a good deal on it?

Sorry for all the questions! ;)
