it should work, you might have to swap the flywheel to use the same starter. I swapped in a brand new 2007 factory new crate engine to replace my 1971 merc. 140. To reuse my starter I had to buy the 12.75 flywheel for the new motor because the new motor came with a 14" flywheel. A new updated coupler to since the new motor had a 1 piece rear main. Not sure when the rear mains went from 2 piece to 1 piece. But you will have the parts you need with the other boat.
The overheat issue could be serious or just a bad thermostat.

Tanks for the input:) I was thinking that also, but was not sure 100% Wonder why merc went to a 14" flywheel on the 3.0 With the over heat issur i'm not sure if i will pursue this 140, but did want to know if the 140 would work Now my 93 3.0 has large intake ports on the head Does the older 140s have the smaller intake ports

update..

I went to look at the boat today, did a compression test before we started her up

The spark plugs looked good, not new, but normal color = good
The compression on each cylinder was from 148-150 psi =good
The engine didn't overheat at all during my test time, anout 140* was the highest temp during this test

Then the owner hooked up the muffs, and turned on the water, hit the starter, and she fired right up, idled good, sounded good, had a slight misfire, but probably from the dizzy cap/rotor, wires, ect.

I then started to inspect the entire engine while it was running. I found no water or oil leaks anywhere.

I was listening to the engine run for oh, about 30 minutes or so, I kept hearing a noise coming from the bell housing, and also a vibration, at idle, and when the owner put a little foot pressure on the side of the engine ( because we were trying to determine if shifting the engine a little would change the vibration and noise, it did) , it got worse. I didn't hear the noise or feel the vibration as much when we increased the engine rpms.I could feel the vibration of what was going on with the coupler or gimbal bearing, radiate through the out drive.

I am thinking maybe a bad gimbal bearing, and bad coupler, or both. We decide to shut her down, so I could check the oil. It didn't have any water in it ,nor did it have any signs of water in the oil.

The oil looked good, and what I mean is that it was used oil, not new, and looked normal in color, just needed to be changed.

The trim/tilt worked on the drive

The out drive looked good, it appeared that the water flow was good

I don't know what I am going to do at this point, but I am interested in the engine.

I would appreciate any input, advice ect
thanks!

Why is the coil wire off? it looks like a gray tachometer wire?

not sure, and I think it is the tach wire, however I believe the tach was working. I am not familiar with the wiring on these older 140
