Could this be a stator problem with my 40hp Mercury?

We have a 1975 40hp Mercury motor. The thing starts great when cold, runs great for about 15 minutes and then it just shuts down. Then when we try to restart, it turns over freely but acts as though it isn't getting any spark. After we allow it to cool off, it starts fine again but will only run a few minutes. We changed the fuel pump, water pump and put new fuel lines from tank to engine, including new ball. Could this be a faulty stator? How would we check the stator and could this be done in the water? This is a pontoon boat and is docked for the summer. Thanks!Paulette

I'd do some troubleshooting first. When it has no spark, check the charge and trigger voltages.
(hate to see the wrong parts changed) If these voltages are OK, check all wiring and both ignition coils. If all checks out.....look to the pack...

Click me
