Could this have ended badly?

We had a little "adventure" on the way to Lake Barkley this past Tuesday. Knute (the heathen) fills up his 98 Dodge pick up truck and we observe gasoline pouring out from the tank. Knute says, "I've been a smelling a little gas lately." The leak is not coming from the bottom of the tank but appears to be coming out the top where the fill hose connects to the tank but we can't really see that area. I'm not talking about a few drips, when I say it's pouring out, I mean it's pouring out.

What do we do? We get back in the truck (towing his pontoon) and continue our trip with me sitting in the back seat holding a fire extinguisher.

We pull over after just a few miles and the leak has stopped, thus confirming our hypothesis about the fill hose.

We arrived at Holiday Hills Resort without blowing ourselves up. As we unload the items in the pickup bed, Knute is having trouble moving the heavy thick plastic container he keeps supplies in. ???? The leak from his exhaust pipe has welded (melted) the bed liner to this thick plastic tote.

In summary, we are driving with a hot exhaust leak in close proximity to a leaking gas tank.

Do you think this could have ended badly?

If anything happens to your friend you can always submit him for a Darwin Award.

I'm thinking Mrs. Tyme is setting us up for the story of what happened to Tyme when she stops posting for him, er, um, I mean when he gets lost in the shredder, er, um, when he disappears.

I couldn't say whether that was Mr. or Mrs. Tyme, but I will admit that "The Chronicles of Tyme2fish" are sure getting more interesting! :D;)

That's wrong. Its regression.

Common sense has died.
It didn't get buried.
Its laying on the ground stinking up the whole place!

Note to self: When driving through Indiana, keep plenty of distance between me and '98 Dodge pullin' a pontoon.

... oh, and pack marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers.

God watches over children and fools. :D I know he must have been watching over me when I was younger (before my common sense kicked in). I'm not sure if hanging out with Knute would be "fun" but I am convinced that it would be entertaining to follow him around and watch his antics (at a safe distance of course).

I think we all have only so much "luck". You and your friend have used up much of yours. It goes without saying that this mess has to be fixed pronto.

To heck with it could have caught fire...don`t you guys know that Gasoline is EXPENSIVE...???

I do not think there is a fire extinguisher big enough to put out that fire that "could" have been.

Not unless sparks are emmitted. You can put gasoline in a test tube, put it on a heating mantle and boil it without igniting it. I've seen it boiled over a bunsen burner as well.

By sparks....you mean like someone thumping a cigarette out the window of a passing car? :D

Re: Could this have ended badly?

We can all sit here and play "I would - I would not", but unless someone is in that situation, it's would be tough to make a call.

Many of us have had to manage a fuel leak at one time or another.

Will it be ok till we get home, or will it need a $175 tow and a $375 repair job, in a strange garage?

The exhuast just added exitment to the ordeal. ; )

Glad everyone still has all their hair.
