Just wondering how many layers (using1.5oz CSM)of glass to put on stringers, bottom of deck, and top of deck, I don't want to be too cheap but I also don't want overkill either. I've read most people use 1.5oz for the stringers, bottom of deck, and the first layer on the top of deck. What about the tabing for the stringers and deck, is 1.5 oz enough??? Thanks for all your help.

Generally 1.5 is a good weight...I used one layer on top of my deck, and I just resin coated the underside of my deck with resin thinned with acetone. The original deck lasted 30 years without a layer of glass on the underside so hopefully it will last 30 more....As for tabbing I would use some roving on top of the CSM-this will give it more strength.

I am sure some more experienced people will chime in. It is all a matter of preference and budget.

P.S. If you have time look through oops!'s thread: hull extension with pics. All the info you will ever need about fiberglass work!

CSM is good for sealing and bonding. But for strength you need woven roving, I use 18oz.

So would 1 layer of CSM on the entire project (stringers, top and bottom of deck) followed by a layer of woven roving fir only the top of the deck, tabbing for the stringers and deck, and say 3/4 of the way up the stringers be good or should I go more? Thanks again!

Re: Couple fiberglass questions

Personally I wouldn't put roving on the deck. It really doesn't need that type of reinforcement and that will add a good bit of weight. As long as you secure the deck to the stringers with some type of glue and/or screws and add a layer of CSM over the top and bottom you should be fine.
I would however use roving on the stringers once they are set in place. This will support them well.
To tie your transom and deck in, I would use a couple layers of roving. I used 18 oz and then finished with a much lighter weight (not quite sure-leftover roving from a bondo fiberglass kit).
Hope this helps.

Your best bet is to read more of the threads on the same type of project so you can get a better understanding of the products used. The sticky at the top of this forum has a great deal of info about different types of glass and what they're use for.
