I know its not the battery.

2) I had the boat running ok with muffs but it wont run when in the water..any clues?

3) Also, I have the seloc manual, is the Clymer Force Outboard Manual much better or worth getting?

any help would be appreciated..thanks!

the battery can turn it but it faster but after a few turns the flywheel freezes where the cranking motor cant turn anymore.

IR...{I loved that cartoon]...slow cranking , you must have at least 9.5volts at the starter when cranking.....if not, is a supply prob, [bad battery/connections]...could be a starter if you have 9.5+volts,or you could have a cylinder full of water when trying to start...try it with the plugs out....not running when in the water means it doesn't run...as far as the manuals go, the only one I am familiar with were published by the manufacturer, and you would swear they were smokin somtin.......enough typo's alone to make you laugh....
WWEEEEEZZZZAAAAALLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once the battery connection wasn't adequate for 12 volts, engine turned over in slow motion. The battery post was so hot that the wingnut and bolt separated from it. Put on a pair of marine terminals and no problem no more.

Re: couple Force 120 L-Drive starting problem questions

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Heres where I stand now. I pulled the lower unit and the 1 year old cranking motor with brand new battery still can only move the flywheel a few turns before freezing. With the plugs removed, it can move it a few more turns but eventually the flywheel will freeze again. Could it be a bad cranking motor/starter or can something in the powerhead freeze up the engine?

Any thoughts what I can check next? I have an appointment with the service center but they are 3 weeks booked!

I would take hot battery, a set of cables, connect + battery to starter stud where the starter cable is connected - from battery to starter case, shield eyes from large spark, if motor spins up to cranking rpm, replace solenoid, and cables. If it does not spin up check starter,
or for stuck piston.
