New forumite and first time poster here. Have lurked for a couple of weeks and found loads of good information. Thanks.

Anyway, I am the new owner of a previously infrequently used and poorly maintained 2007 Azure AZ220 Sportdeck that is somewhat underpowered by a 5.0 GXi-G which appears to have had the original SX-A drive replaced by a used-in-salt-water DPS-A. (Don't know the whole story on that but I figure the SX just couldn't cut the lack of maintenance along with the size of the boat and burned out.) After acquisition I did what any new owner should do under the circumstances, change the oil and fuel filter. Had to order a prop wrench before changing the gear lube and an impeller (wow, iBoats VolvoPenta store sure is prompt) before changing it, but I did take it out for an initial shake-down cruise beforehand. After sufficient time to bring the engine to operating temperature (which I probably didn't do during a test drive because the boat was almost out of gas - shame on me), I heard a squealing sound from the engine bay, sort of like the sound an improperly-aligned/loose/worn out v-style alternator belt would make. I was unsuccessful in pinpointing the source. I have searched the forum and found the thread about engine paint from around the fuel filter getting into the fuel pump and making such a noise and will have to investigate that, but in the meantime I wonder if anybody has any comments of what I found when I changed the impeller. I can't help but think it has happened to many people before me.

As the picture I hopefully uploaded hopefully shows, one of the veins/fins/lugs/whatever-the-proper-nomenclature-is on the old impeller is about halfway gone. I have no idea how long ago it happened. Most certainly it was ingested into the cooling system. My shake down cruise (maybe 1 1/2 to 2 hours total with a maximum continuous operating time of around 1 hour) suggested no problems with engine water temperature.

What is the worst/best case scenario I am dealing with as far as engine damage? Is there any reasonable remedial action that can be taken to alleviate the possibility of problems related to the issue?

Could the impeller have been what was making the squealing noise or is it more likely the bearings on the alternator, belt tensioner, power steering pump, etc.? As it is raining in LA (lower Alabama) this weekend I am unable/unwilling to take it out to test after replacement as it does not have a convertible top like my lase boat.

Any comments, suggestions or recommendations would be most welcome.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... I guess the impeller pump didn't get any maintenance either,...

Ya definitely need a kit, maybe a pump, along with the new impeller...

I'm not sure of the Volvo water flows, so I'll let somebody else tell ya where to find the missin' piece....

its a good place to start

Not likely the impeller was making the squeal. Check the circulating pump if the noise is coming from the front of the engine. Check the fuel pump if it is coming from the rear.

Get used to having problems with the raw water pump. Volvo Penta sells these by the truck load. If you are lucky you found the problem before any engine damage was done. If you are unlucky the pump will leak from the weep hole even though it is pumping and the engine seems to be running fine. When you get back to port you will find "unusual" salt crystals on the engine that are a result of the salt water mist formed by dripping salt water on the sepentine belt. At this point you need to replace the belt tensioner, alternator, the raw water pump, and possibly other pulley wheels.. Don't worry about availability because Volvo Penta sells these by the truckt load and most parts stores have at least 10 in stock. Wonder why? If you are unlucky and did not discover the leek immediately you most likely need a new engine if the salt water was inhaled through the intake. This has happened to me three times. Kinda expensive and very frustrating. Try to talk to someone at Volvo Penta headquarters. They have a firewall that prevents any contact from consumers.
