Couple of questions on a 1988 Evinrude 150

I'm thinking seriously about purchasing a used bass boat and it has a 1988 Evinrude 150 hp outboard on it. I checked the compression on all 6 cylinders and it all were in 3% of each other and in the high 90's. I was basically wanting to know of any know issues with this particular motor, and anything else I should look at?

As with any purchase or repair analogy... power head and lower unit are the two most expensive fixes. If compression is good and LU holds oil/doesn't have water in it/shifts ok it's likely OK. Maintenence records are nice to have to see if it's been a lemon or a gas guzzler.

Why is it for sale? Right price on it? Worth the buck even if you have to fix stuff? How much do you know how to fix? All stuff to consider because BOAT means; bring on another thousand.

The guy is selling it because he is trying to buy a car to go back and forth to school. The boat is in good shape a I am knowledgeable with self maintaining. I have had boats before and I have one now. I checked the lower unit and no water was in the case.

Engine sounds good... good year too.. How's the hull? I would check that too.

I crawled over,under and through. Floor is solid and the transom felt strong the power T/T worked. It as dings and scuffs but it's an 89 model boat. It even had a jackplate on it. Trailer is good and solid with good tires and a spare. The gauges work as well as the livewell pumps and aerators. The rear of the boat under the back deck looks spotless and the original resin is still visible and looks good and dry, The bilge area looks good and no sign long term of standing water. What I mean is no heavy water stains.Aluminum gas tank 18 gallon. The right side of the boat has had what looked like a small hole ( about 2 inch spot) but has been fixed and painted. Gel coat looks dull but its still on there. all gauges and lights work. He wanted 3200 I talked him down to 2500 pending water test.

I had an 87 200XP evinrude with oil injection....ran good...but smoked like the devil (even with a new VRO pump)and used tons of gas...those 6 cylinders are very thirsty ones!!!!

I will second the thirsty part I have a 1985 xp150, if you run wide open it drinks the fuel however not that bad if you just run about 3/4

Cant be worse than my 75hp mercury on my 24' pontoon running wot trying to get from one fishing hole to another.
