Got my boat almost ready, now the motor. I have a 1962 Johnson 40hp Seahorse. The manual says for an oil gas ratio to use 24:1 but the previous owner says to use 50:1. He also told me to put lead in the gas but the manual says to use unleaded premium gas. Can anybody tell me which is correct? Also talked to a tech at the marina today. Told him that my motor ran pretty good last time I took it out about a month ago but I would like to get a tune up and have everything checked out. He told me just because it runs good doesn't mean it's healthy and began to tell me horror stories of other people who thought they had healthy engines  . Does this sound suspicious? How can I be sure?

Follow the manual recommendation and mix 87 octane gas at 24:1 using TCW3 oil.

Hi Mogan
Since you have a manual, why not just inspect and service this motor your self? If it seems to run good, starts as it should and generally performs well, this is an indecation of well being. I think your tech was just trying to make you aware of things that need looking after and to help justify the $300. bill he would have to charge you for the parts and labor. This is about what what an annual service and tune would cost. Mostly labor. I would doubt if you could sell a 62 40hp for that much, your tech knows he can't and doesn't want to. He probably would like to do the job, he needs you to understand that it costs just as much if not more to repair and service older models as newer ones.

Hi moganhunter

I a way your tech might be right. If your motor wasnt serviced lately, an impeller that suddenly breaks or a carbureator that fouls can ruin a good running motor in almost seconds. But with a minimum of regular service, above and oil change in lower gear, that motor may serve you as long as you want. I would recommend you to get a manual and give it a small basic service before you use it. Wount cost you much.
