I'm a beach, I'm a beach , cause the beach is back..... (Elton John)

I'm not sure how some of your people have any fun. I guess it 's the lake you are on most of the time. I know I bought a boat (90 Sea Ray) that grew up on Lake Lanier, Ga. which I always assumed was a deep water lake, and now it spends most of it's days running the Santee Cooper lakes in SC, which is a very shallow lake with lots of sand bars, beaches and shallow shore lines. It still looks great.

If I couldn't, shouldn't, wouldn't beach, I'd have to park at the landing and throw rocks at the jet skis.

I used to beach my Searay all the time and there wasn't a mark on it. I guess some of you have the idea that when you beach you power in and shoot a rooster tail as you grind it in. It just isn't like that. I used to idle in until it started getting really shallow then turn the motor off and coast in until the foot touched the ground than trim it all the way up and jump out and pull it in th erest of the way by hand. Once the bow touched the sand I'd trim the motor down to hold the boat. I rarely if ever used the anchor to hold it unless there were a lot of other boats nearby and I didn't want to worry about the boat drifting. There wasn't a mark on that boat when I sold it.

I boat in the DE bay (among other locations), where JZ is near, and I beached my Chappy weekly in the sand. The bottom got scuffed, but over the years, it was never to the point of disastrous.

It's all about balancing life and longevity. Pulling people is harder on all the engine parts on a boat, but we do it. Using the boat on sunny days fades the vinyl and bakes the gel coat.

My boat lasted a long time, and if the bottom was less than perfect it didn't matter in the long run.

Remember that the sand on the east coast can be rated as high as the most abrasive silica sand paper because most of it is silica sand! Still, I'd be careful and do it anyway. I would have beached my current boat, but my favorite island is temporarily off limits for bird migrations! (Champaigne Island, North Wildwood, NJ)

I beach every time i go out. there is a sandbar at the lake i go to and the side where everyone pulls up on is really sweet... within 3-4 feet the water drops off to 5 ft... so i usually dont even have to tilt the motor up with my 16' boat. i just kill the motor about 10 ft away to make sure i dont suck sand. no tide to worry about...

we would probably use the boat alot less if we didnt go to the beach often.

Re: Couple Questions on Beaching a Boat

Ok gotta tell a funny story. A few weeks ago 2 of my sons and I came across a boat that had been beached on an island, 2 guys and 2 young ladies had camped over night and the tide had left the boat high and dry. The stranded castaways flagged us down. We pulled up beside them and jumped out of the boat. My sons and the other boys were standing there on the beach discussing the best way to get the boat off. Seems they did not think the five of us could budge it and wanted to pull it off with my boat. I looked at the two young ladies in their string bikinis and got a sudden surge of energy.

While the guys stood on the beach arguing over the best way to do the job I walked over to the bow of the boat, turned my back to it and squated. I lifted the bow and pushing with my legs started to spin the bow around and point it at the water. I almost had it in the water before the boys realized what I was doing. They ran over to help and within a couple of minutes she was floating.

As we were leaving I heard one of the girls say to her boyfriend, I can't believe you let that old man show you up like that. My legs were cramping, my chest was pounding but I just puffed out my chest and strutted my stuff back to my boat. Yeah, at 59 years old I still like to show off to the ladies. LOL

Re: Couple Questions on Beaching a Boat

one time i was looking to the left and the wind blew me to the right ... so I sideswiped sanibel causway. Another time we were just cruising along in the intercoastal when 600lbs of porpoise jumped up and we hit him square in the side. It was a big collision and the whole boat shuddered. We were so lucky that he hit under the anchor pulpit instead of over. 600lbs of injured porpoise landing inside your boat probably doesn't have any good endings. He cracked the anchor pulpit, bent the handrail, and even bent the anchor. I love my boat. It bears the scars of a victorious warrior. My fishing buddy had a pristine grady white. It was absolutely perfect because we always took my boat. The day before Hurricane Charlie blew over his dock and sunk his Grady White it was still one perfect looking boat.

Beach my boat? On the sand? OMG. the horror of it. the scratched paint. my boat would be so ruined.

Best story of the day!

Reminds me of the time at the dock I told a guy how to get his boat on his trailer by backing his truck up a little to float the boat and winch it in. His wife (no string bikini, but nice looking) thought my idea was great, but the guy didn't listen to me. I just walked away, but the wife kind of looked at me after another guy came of did just what I suggested.

Re: Couple Questions on Beaching a Boat

Thank you all for your comments, I really like the difference of opinions. Here's what I am going to do for my first time. I am going to stop about 100' off shore, turn my bow out towards the sea, place an anchor off the stern, move forward gently to set the anchor. Then I will set the bow anchor, lift up the outdrive, go overboard and inspect to sea floor then waddle up to shore and pass out from all that workout. Okay, now where are the flaws in my procedure?

Flaw: abandoning your vessel. Get a long tube for breathing and stay down there, with a ruler, to monitor the tide. What a slacker.

Re: Couple Questions on Beaching a Boat

My 1963 Aristocraft (ive owned it 3 yrs) must have seen alot of conditions. We love to party on the beach. sometimes anchored off shore (if we are late) and beached if we're early.

Heck the boat is almost as old as me and I feel I deserve the best time every time and so does my runabout. I say carefully beach it and go have fun.

Isn't that why we buy these money pits :D

"the 2 best days of owning a boat... buying & selling... it's what you do in between that counts ;)
