I recently got a sea king ( K900 5106 A ), late 70s i guess. anyway i really dont know anything about boat motors, but i figure as far as they go these old ones look pretty simple . so, it was running ok and hopefully still will be once i put it back in the water. ok as in i guess its normal to be really loud and vibrate alot. sometimes it seems like something changes and it will suddenly get louder, vibrate more, smoke more, without any increase in rpms. but maybe its just my imagination? I usually keep the holes in the leg for exhaust/water outlet covered as it keeps the noise down a pretty good ammount, and i figure what was coming out there simply comes out with the rest under water just above the prop. i get the feeling its a bad idea but maybe not.

i decided to take off the carburator and clean it , seems like it went fine, but now ill have to re adjust the hi and low any tips would be great on that, also wondering if anyone knows the plug gap. this is likely a stupid question, but should there be an air filter? theres just a plastic tube sortof thing that is attached to the intake. i have plenty more but my origional post dissappeared when i went to submit it, and i really need to post pics to help explain some of the other things anyway.

What worries me about your post is "maybe its my imagination" carnt be much if you are unsure it happened. The uppper holes in the leg are to reduce backpressure in the exhaust when starting ..if you block off the exhaust once running maybe ok but to block off the water is bad as you will change the flow and backpressure to the pump..how do you know the water pump is working if you block it off ???...not usually an air filter on older motors. plug gap 20 thou ...no doubt someone will be along with the other informaton...

They are loud and they do vibrate.Uncover the relief holes and be sure water mists out when running.
While the powerhead is air cooled the leg is water cooled. You will cook the bottom main bearing if the leg is not cooling.Initial carb setting on the high speed is one turn out from gently bottomed.3/4 turn on the idle.Final adjustments on the water with the motor warmed. My info on plug gap is .025.
Marine motors don't usually have an air filter Not much dust and dirt on the water.
Most motors have a silencer, yours doesn't.
Sometimes there is a shield or screen to keep things from being sucked into the motor.
You will have to use a host site to do pictures.

thanks for the info, yeah i was worried about not being able to see if the water pump was working with the relief holes covered, i think ill leave one or two open and cover the rest just so i can see if the pumps quit and still should help with the noise..
looks like mud dobbers (wasps) made a nest in the thing at one time i have mud falling out from underthe top of the motor , ill just blow all that off with the carb covered and put a screen over later just to keep any junk out.

one other thing is that there is what looks like a filter on the fuel line inside the cover , it goes in from fuel fitting, one hose into motor, and one to the carb. it looks origional, if its a filter im sure i needs to be replaced, can anyone tell me what it is?

i think mine is a 78 also, pretty much sure thats normal with water just kindof spitting out the holes in the leg thats how mine is also, i would guess that the oil is from the exhaust... im sure someone else knows for sure..

well i changed the gap on the plug, it was around .028 changed it to .025 and got it back in the water , it runs noticeably smoother now with the clean carb/plug.. weather has been pretty bad so i havent had much chance to mess with the carb adjustments a whole lot but its better when it is pretty close, it seems kind of tricky to get it just right, i tried the one turn out to start with the high speed but could not get the motor to start at all, i think i ended up having to open it a couple of turns. high and low dont have to be set in any order do they?
