Coupler and U Join Grease

Ok guys, I replaced trim switches today and did an inspection-lube while I was there. Gimble bearing and u joints were perfect to my suprize, nothing but fresh grease. I didn't have any Quicksilver "Coupler and Spline" Grease. I used high perfromance bearing lube for the u joints turning and cleaning till I had fresh grease from all 8 bearing caps and for the splines I used Permatex Antiseize lube, the silver stuff that comes in a paste. I cleaned all the old stuff off and applied a generous amount. Was this stuff Ok?

Bondo is the master of the grease questions.....

But I will say that the "high performance bearing lube", as long as it's a grease and not a high vicosity oil, will be okay.

As far as using permatex antiseize.......

Lets put it this way. There is no such thing as antiseize on a boat. Antiseize, or neverseize as some call it is known to us as alwayszeize or abosolutelyseizeseverydammtime.....

The common element in any antiseize is a metal lubricant. Be it nickel or copper or graphite. Whenever you have 2 different metals and an electrolyte you get electric current. Electric current causes electrolosys which contributes to corrosion.

Your 2 different metals are the lube you used and the shaft you put it on. The electrolyte is the water.... if it's saltwater its a better electrolyte so that means more corrosion.

All and all if you mounted a drive with any kind of antiseize i'd personally pull it and use the correct lube.

I did not know all that, I've been using it too, but it's the marine grade never-seez, don't know what the difference is though.

Ayuh,... Never-Sieze is Not a Grease,... It's an Antisieze compound...
I'd have used the same Bearing Grease for the splines.....

I smear triple guard grease on the splines and shaft, that stuff really sticks, I have a habit of putting never-seez on the bolts threads of most everything I take apart that doesn't require loktite. I've just started applying a small daub of aviation sealant on threads of below waterline bolts and nuts.

I've put a dab on my spark plugs the past few years............removing has been very easy. I'm always concerned that they will break upon removal.....
