Re: Court Order – The US Currency Must Change, Again

IF the primary reason for changing US currency bills is to assist the blind in determining bill denominations without relying on an outside source for help , I'm thinking that implimenting some sort of pocket/hand held scanner would be a shorter route and less extreme alternative to a complete overhaul of the present currency.I have no idea whether that technology exists currently or would be feasible but at first impulse it sure seems so.

I don't know if it is true, but I understand Ray Charles, early in his career, required that he was always paid in singles for this exact reason . . .

But what about vending machine businesses. My brother's automated carwash takes $1's, $5's, $10's, and $20's. Will this mean that he will have to get new readers for all his machines?

I don't mean any disrespect to your daughter, PW, or any other blind person, but who will pay to change the bill reader's of those machines? Assuming they change the size or do something else drastic to the bills? Are blind people going to pay? What about the government? Should they have to pay?

Just asking questions ...

There are, and always have been, unscrupulous people in the world. There may be more today, but it is probably due to the increased population rather than a higher percentage.

By and large, most folks are honest. She has very rarely if ever had a problem with people making change.

By far her biggest problem has been getting her backpack ripped off, usually while she is wearing it, always with the white cane of course, and usually at a Greyhound Station. She always carries the bulk of her cash in her sock , and her id and cc's somewhere other than in her backpack. Usually, the biggest value she loses is the backpack itself.

Your gonna think I'm lying cuz I would think that way..... An old black mechanic by the name of Mr. Beachum was blind. He could fix anything on a car just by the sounds and feel. When you paid Mr. Beachum he would feel the money and could tell the difference. I never believed it till I saw it myself. His son Kelvin now has his own garage and is one of the greatest mechanics in the area. Most of what Kelvin knows he learned from his dad. Feel free to google the name if ya don't believe me.

In Holland they not only had different size paper ,but also different symbols feelable through thickness of certain areas on the bank note.
Absolutely no reason why we should not be able to do that too.

Is anyone actually opposed to the treasury embossing our money?

US currency is kind of dull to start with. I welcome the change. Add some color, change the size, heck create some differentiation. I think it would be neat to have a contest for the design of the new currency. The 10 day window is rather brain dead.

By golly, Pointer, we finally agree on something.

I use both Canadian money and US money on a regular basis, and frankly it is very convenient to have the different denominations a different color. Now I know I somehow manage to use US money effectively, but if it would make a task easier, and not do too much harm, why not.

As far as the blind goes, there are lots of ways to effectively address this all with varying costs involved- by far the cheapest method would have to be altering the size. How much could it cost to cut a $20 1/8" shorter, or a $5 --1/16" wider and a $10 --1/8" wider---or some sort equally simple solution.?

Could do it like photographic cut film. There are small notches cut in one the border close to one corner. The type of film is determined by the number and spacing of the notches.

Heck we already run a thread threw the bills, how about 2 threads for a 5'er and 3 for a 10 spot, and run it the long ways for a 20 and on and on. Seems rather simple to me.......
