Courtesy Fishing, Where did it go?

Had a run in with a jerk Sunday morning. I was fishing a grass line boat facing east and I was letting the north wind carry me to the south with the grass as I was making 45 degree angle cast to the grass line when another boat came in 30 yards on the south side of me and starting fishing the way I was headed. I asked the driver if he wanted to get in my boat to save gas and he told me to go to hell and that it was a public lake and that he had a tournament to win. I bit my tongue and used my big motor to get on the other side of him and and paralleled the grass line with my 24 foot pontoon blocking him.
I take my fishing serious as the bass boaters, tournament fisherman and guides. I've out fished all my fishing buddies this year from my pontoon as far as quantity and quality. If he would came up and asked I would have let him fish and I would have left, But Jerks can shove it.

Just because I fish from a pontoon (until March) doesn't give the others excuse to barge in. What would you have done?

If that ever happens again, blow out the hole, run the whole thing with your big motor then leave. He might as well leave then too.:)

There are lot of ignorance fishermans and boaters out there. Was he drifting south too? if he was then he was clearly in the wrong. A courteous guy would have pulled in north of you and fish behind you. If he was heading north then all y'all have to do is just pass one another and keep on going.

Re: Courtesy Fishing, Where did it go?

On lake Mille Lacs here in mn me and my buddy and 2 kids were trolling a mud flat in a beater 76 glasstron. All a sudden 20-30 big money bass boats descended on the tiny area. Some one in his pretty bass boat with his pretty matching shirt and pretty matching hat told us we should get our POS off the flat cuz a fishing contest just started. [ BTW a big public lake, and we were there 1st].
Translation...Hey guys... why dont you throw out your anchor right in the middle off all the contestants that are trolling and have a swim call for the next 2 hrs so your kids can practice thier cannon balls off the bow... And dont forget to blast the stereo and let out a mile of anchor rope so ya swing back and forth 50 yds. So thats what we did... fk em and thier disrespect...

Courtesy went away when fishing became a competitive sport for macho scatheads instead of a relaxing recreational pastime for gentlemen.

That is why I won't fish the heavily fished waters or within 100 yards of another fisherman.

The problem with that is, nodoby else in the tourny wronged you and you were a **** to all of them.

As for the OP, I agree with what you did. You can't com in someone's drift line along grass and get in the way. Going the same way is one thing, but causing them to change plans when they were clearly there first, and being a prick about it, deserves you doing the same....with a big pontoon boat, lol.

I'll never understand these tournament guys. I love to fish but I don't really have that primal competitive urge that would make me want to fish tournaments. Not that I think all tournament anglers are like that. I just think some guys like the competition more than the fishing. Win at all costs and what not.

Yeah but I bet half of the other boats heard the 1st guy yelling at us from 50 ft away to get our POS boat off the [thier] flat. It was a calm day.You could hear well. He made it a point to be LOUD as if to impress the other fisherman in the contest.. Showin off...They all looked to be in agreement with him smiling... Looking at us as if to say , well what are you still doing here ? Youve been told...IMHO...They didnt look at him as if to say , That was rude and uncalled for..Thats the vibes I got from all of em. Not one person waved back to us , no one says hi . Just all attitude How dare you be amongst our $30.000,00 boats in your $3000.00 boat. Thats when we said fk em, and out went the anchor. If they would have been thier 1st , we wouldnt have even fished that area, let alone move in on em and tell THEM {rudely and loudly] that THEY shoild get THIER POS boat out of there . I have no regrets about that day... Am I proud ? na... not sorry either
I think maybe next time , some of those fisherman may reconsider how they treat someone else on a lake

And to add one more thing... If the first guy would have said something along the lines of Hey guys, just so you know... a fishn contest just started and a bunch of boats are gonna be hitting this flat hard. Sorry to move in on ya We probably would have thanked him for the heads up, wished him luck, gotten out of there and tried another spot.....:D

Ever heard of the 90/10 law, 90% of the fish live in 10% of the water...

Well there is a 10/90 law too, 10% of the fisherman cause 90% of the problems...

I've had the misfortune to run into a couple of the 10%'ers

132,516 acres, and they have to fish the one you're on.

If you check out the real winners in the fishin' world, they aren't fighting a crowd. They are usually all by themselves on a big lake like that. There's a gazillion mud flats like that, with some producing bigger and better fish because they are obscure or small and don't get the pressure.

I hate to be a rookie but what does blow out the hole mean to a lake fisherman? I mainly fly fish trout streams in the Rockies and never heard this before.

Its an old Scandanavian Whalers Greeting...

I think the correct terminology is... Blow it out YOUR hole... Loosly translated it means--- Hey Buddy. good luck fishn" and have a great day!!! So feel free to say it to everyone at the ramp or on the lake...:);):D

Or maybe not..... you dont wanna be TOO friendly.

Its disrespectful....unless your hunting whales.

It's what grown men do when they're acting like a 5 yrs old throwing temper tantrum. The only thing that does is pissed off the other guys. Two wrongs don't make a right in this case.

The way I take it is to get on the side he was fishing to and crank the big motor to jump out on plane and ride out the area that the fish are in.

I would have no problem with someone fishing 100 feet away from me. Tolerance and people working together is the key.

Speaking of tolerance, how far away does one have to be before they have to ask permission from a Master pontoon bass fisherman?

Ahh, I got ya. I most likely would have done the same thing then. I usually go along the lines of "there's a jerk in every bunch" and try to not let them spoil it for everyone. But, if the bunch is kinda cheering on the jerk, then I wouldn't feel a bit bad. Especially on a public lake like that. I bet they all went home telling the story about this guy not caring about the tourny fishers, lol...all mad.

Hopefully having to deal with that will make the guy think twice about being an *** next time.

Running your big motor and scaring all of the fish in a small area. Basically saying "If I can't get in there, nobody is catching these fish today."

Not exactly nice, and somewhat of an F.U. to someone...

This is what i meant. It's not nice, but if a guy did that, he'd deserve it. Might make a enemy , but it didn't sound like he wanted to be friends in the first place.

Re: Courtesy Fishing, Where did it go?

I don't know where you are from but next time they do that get the guys reg #'s and go talk to the sponsors of the tourney and and your local fish and game. Here in PA the tourney sponsors will usually DQ the guy for being un-sportsman like. They have to follow the same rules you do. Most tourneys in my area are on public lakes and if too many complaints get to DCNR and fish and game they aren't allowed to have one on that lake again. I had a similar issue last summer when about 20 boats darn near swamped us. We were about 20 feet from the no wake bouys and as soon as they cleared the bouys the hit the gas. They were about 50 ft from us and every one did it. On the way out I stopped and payed DCNR a visit and they had a little chat with the whole group that was in the tourney. I wasn't the only one that complained that day. The DCNR guys said get the reg #'s next time and they'll start writing tickets because are tired of this happening.
