Cover Recommendations?

I'm looking for a winter cover for my boat. The 2 piece cover that came with the boat works well, but doesn't completely cover the boat. I'm looking for something semi-fitted to go over the whole thing, since my boat is stored in an open roofed building (wind, snow, bird crap, etc.). I tried a tarp, but that doesn't seem to work very well.

Prices for covers are all over the chart from $150 to over $600. Has anyone found a brand/type they can recommend.

Thanks!

Re: Cover Recommendations?

Ernest T, I had mine shrink wrapped however if you have the open roofed option, this cover would run you a bit but would last you a long time (especially covered under roof) but you could even store outdoors with it.

Re: Cover Recommendations?

Brutha,

I opted for a custom cover. I store my boat outside all summer, and this cover keeps any of the gelcoat from oxidizing via UV. I store inside during winter, but the cover maker said it will be fine as long as no more than 3-5" of snow sit for a significant time. My Bimini top forms the apex of support, and 3 poles are used for centerline supports. It wasn't cheap, but it will protect my investment.

Re: Cover Recommendations?

Thanks for the cover tips. I like custom cover Bear has, since it covers the sides. I priced a custom cover like that from a local gal that makes them, but I just couldn't afford it.

Shrink wrapping sounds like it would provide great protection, but here in the south we have occasional warm days during the fall and winter, and I want to have the option to take the boat out if an opportunity presents itself.

I just ordered a fitted cover. I thought it was pretty pricy at $450, but much less than a custom job. It has a 5 year warranty and looks pretty heavy duty. I'll post a review after I've used it for a season. Its an EnduraCover.

Thanks Again!

How's that cover working for you?

Thanks.

Jon

The EnduraCover (made by Carver) that I bought seems to work well. I bought it from iboats while they had it on sale. The cover seemed to fit well. It comes down just past the rub rail all the way around, and has a hood that covers the outboard. Had to remove the Bimini top and lay it on the back of the boat, but the cover went over it with no problems. The material was fairly light weight, but seems plenty sturdy.

My only problem was that it was difficult to tie the cover down to the boat. Since the boat is stored on a rack at a marina, I could only run straps under the bow and the rear corners of the boat in locations that would avoid the fork lift forks and rack that the boat sits on. It would be nice to be able to tie down the sides of the cover, but there was nothing to hook the straps too. I considered getting some suction cup tie downs, but a couple of guys that had used them said that they would not hold for more than a couple of weeks. I think it will be OK since it is inside a building with only the center roof open to the outside. In its current location it doesn't get too much wind, but does get some light rain/snow on the rear of the boat.

Next time I'm down there I'll shoot some photos of it.
