I have a 2005 25hp yamaha 2-stroke that I want to convert to remote steering and throttle. Can this easily be done? What would I need to do this?

Re: coverting to remote steering

you will need yamaha control for shift and throttle, teleflex rotary steering, and the yamaha steering arm at the engine end. being a center console, all the equipment must be routed thru the tunnel under the floor.

Re: coverting to remote steering

Hmm... I priced it all out and it came to around $500 for everything I would need. I love the feel of a center console and being able to stand up and drive, but i'm not quite convinced it is worth the price. But it has been a while since my last cc boat. I also have a concern, what do I do with the stop switch that is attached to the tiller bracket?

Here is a picture of what i'll hopefully end up with:

i don't know who installed that steering. but it's an accident waiting to happen. i go by the rule, oif nothing on the deck to trip over. i use wireless remote trolling motor, my foot control is in the garage, i use the key fob, hand control. wiht that console you definately need rotary steering, as there is not enough room for the rack system, inside the console. i'm sure yamaha has the solution, with the stop switch. i use a bass boat pedistal butt seat, for a leaning post at the helm, it's small and doesn't take up a lot of valuable space.

what i was pointing out, in the first boat, the engine controls were run correctly, looked like someone replaced steer cable, the easy way.

Re: coverting to remote steering

ohmybad -- with respect to the stop switch, I had the same challenge with a console retrofit into a 14 foot Springbok aluminum boat. The motor was a little 7.5 merc with no ignition switch or electric start, etc.

I removed the stop switch from the engine and mounted it up at the console (in the remote throttle housing, where the the ignition switch would have gone). Then I spliced some wire and ran it all the way back to the motor and in the same access as the throttle cable. The stop switch hole in the motor I plugged with the blank I took out of the remote (identical size!).

The entire setup worked like a charm until the weather broke down the wiring insulation. Easy fix, that. Next time I'll protect it better.

These are terrible pictures but they give you some idea. In the first one you can just see the engine stop switch in the red box where it's mounted in the remote's key opening. Sure, ya gotta climb back to start up, but shutting down after you dock is a breeze. Also, it never hurts to be able to kill the motor at any time on demand...

And here is the barely visible stop switch hole plugged with the blank from the remote.

And, what the hey -- the view from the helm under way at a blistering six knots or so.
