Cowl gaskets

I have two older Johnson outboards, a 1978 70 and a 1972 9 1/2. I have had pretty good luck rounding up parts for them but can't find a source for the cowl sealing gasket.

Any suggestions? I was thinking I could use some rubber edge molding as a worst case scenario. On both engines that existing cowl gasket is pretty much gone and /or missing...

Thanks for the help,

Billy

Re: Cowl gaskets

Here's a pic of my 1980 Johnson 75 with a fuel hose cowling gasket. It looks sharp and has held up well - I did this about three years ago now. I set up an X-Acto knife blade in a bench vice with just enough blade showing to slice through one wall of the hose. I then ran 5/16" hose over the blade to slit it. Then ran a rag soaked in laquer thinner through the inside of the hose to remove any manufacturing residue/oils, etc. Then ran a bead of rubber adhesive into the full length of the slit. Not too much, just enough to wet it out. The old gasket and fastening staples are completely removed from the cowling and it has also been wiped clean. Slip the hose over the lip on the cowling and trim to fit when done. It worked great on mine and looks sharp, too!

I had the same problem with my 85 70 evinrude cowling gasket and remedied it with a specialized marine door seal gasket... works perfectly and gives a great waterproof seal. my buddy at the marine shop has a 100 foot roll of this material. let me know the lenght you need and ill ship you some at a reasonable price.
