Saw a few older posts about this, and decided new foam and all that costs too much. Being an auto mechanic, we've got a few dead cars sitting around the shop.. I popped the hood on one, and grabbed the insulation material that is mounted under the hood of a lot of cars.. cut it to fit inside my cowl, used a spray on trim adheseve ( 3M ) to attach it... looks like it's going to be a pretty quiet motor, now, as I had to pull the old foam out of it, it was didintegrating and getting all over the engine. Heat, oil and all that won't bother it. Some of you maybe can even take it off your old tow vehicle, or wife's car when she isn't looking.. maybe cruise a junkyard.. $5, tops. It generally just snaps onto the hood of most cars. One whole piece did the inside of a 125 Force.

Re: Cowl insulation

Has the insulation made much difference to the noise level of the motor?
My motor still has the original foam in it but if different foam would make it quieter I would consider changing it.

Re: Cowl insulation

I'll let you know after this weekend.. haven't had it out yet. It's not foam, its more like insulation you put in the attic.. but "sealed".. on each side.. no loose fibers if you cut it cleanly.

I am just impressed with my ingenuity, resoucefulness, and cheapness.. er "frugelness" is the proper term.. heh heh............

Ok, TwoFish... without a doubt, quieter than factory.. the best part is, it seem as if the faster I went, the ratio of quiet to noise got better.. at full throttle, I was hearing more of a nice quiet buzzzzzz than engine sound.

Re: Cowl insulation

Thanks Bob.

I?ll have to look into this as the insulation in mine is starting to look the worse for ware. I would not mine a bit less noise as well.

Cheers

Insulation they put under carpets is very good particularly in the higher grades.
