Cowling Gasket Replacement

My 1987 200hp Evinrude needs a new gasket at the base of the cowling. It is a gray rubber-like gasket that is deteriorated to the point it needs replacing. The dealer tells me they don't carry new gaskets and I should just glue-on some weather stripping instead. This does not sound right to me. The existing gasket is (used to be) a fairly solid rubber-like material that is attached to the cowling with large stainless steel staples, stapled through the fiverglass cowling. Does anyone have any suggestions about what material I should use and how I should attach it?

I was able to buy a new one for my 84 model and just removed the staples and used contact cement with a lot of black (office supply) binder clips to hold it in place until glue was dry.

Re: Cowling Gasket Replacement

I suspect your dealer just couldnt be bothered ordering it or maybe he knows better.....but.....they are still listed as available for that motor at a couple of places.....try boats dot net or crowleymarine.....i'd post a direct link but this place seems to be killing off external parts links lately.....i think its a conspiracy.:D

Btw, that part has been superseded by 0912032 and the seal is black....
