Crack in hull

I found a crack in the bottom of my hull on my 84 cimmarron bass boat. Its located in the front, about 4 feet back from the bow, on the outside of a strake(i believe thats what they are called) It dosent appear deep and its not soft, and dosent flex when pressure is put on it. But the gel is flaking around the break. I firmly believe its just in the gel-coat. My thinking is to lightly grind the gelcoat back to the fiberglass to see if the crack is into it and if not fix it with marine tex. If its into the glass, I'll take it to the guy that fixed my transom last year. Does my thinking sound right? Or am I going about this all wrong? Thanks for the help, Rudy. Oh, I forgot, the crack is about 1- 1.5 inches across.

Re: Crack in hull

Ok, I was wrong!! The figerglass was cracked and it had a small 1/8" hole in it. I probed it with a drill bit, and found it wasnt thru the inner layer. :D I patched it with marine tex. Used a syringe to inject the epoxy into the hole until it filled it then used wax paper to mold it to the shape of the hull. Just gotta wait 24 hrs now. I gotta watch them stumps.
