Good Monday Afternoon,
Over the 4th of July I had my 1986 Fourwinns 170 Horizon with a MCM170 Mercrusier on the lake and while cruising at a low speed I do believe I hit something with the lower unit. The next time I used full throttle it overheated fast, the heat gauge did not peg but was close. When I got it home I pulled off the lower unit and it was obvious it had been hot, the impeller housing was a little melted so I replace the housing, impeller and base, the old impeller was in pretty good shape. Put the lower unit back on and started her up in the driveway with a garden hose attached. I was checking for oil leaks and noticed water coming out of a hair line crack in the drive shaft housing just above where the lower unit bolts on. During higher throttle in comes out pretty good. I would guess their must be a water passage in the drive shaft housing thus the leak. So how do I repair without spending a bundle? I was thinking maybe JB Weld or taking it in to a weld shop and maybe a wire feed weld, I would imagine the outdrive is aluminum. I am a former ASE Auto Mechanic but do not have the equipment to weld. SO any suggestions would be a appreciated, I would love to keep this beautiful old boat in the water??.Thanks Gary.

UpDate.....The crack is in the drive shaft housing just above where the lower unit and drive shaft housing meet, look at this link, crack is in the housing right behind nut #20 http://www.iboats.com/Mercruiser_St...7895438--**********.181416989--view_id.272967

while cursing at a low speed

What did the low speed do to make you angry? :D ;)

I've never seen a unit crack there - is it where the intake water goes through the bell housing? (Behind where the o ring goes?)

If it were me I would search for a used bell housing. You can probably pick one up off of ebay, etc for not much money.

Oh yeah - welcome to the forum!

Re-reading your post I believe I misunderstood where the leak is coming from. Can you post a picture?
