If you're gonna use a filler, then you're gonna have to open up the crack. Might as well get a new cover, then you won't have to do it over again ... and again ... :facepalm:

Sand to bare metal. Wipe with acetone. Mix the Marine Tex. Spread it on the cover. Embed a piece of fiberglass cloth in the marinetex to give it additional strangth. Cover the cloth with more Marine Tex.
