I just purchased an 86' four winns horizon 190. The guy said that he tought the head gasket was gone because it started blowin white smoke really bad. I got the boat for $1000, thinking "no problem". Started taking the engine apart and this is what I found. I have numerous options, but would like some advice as to my route. I could buy a bare block, a rebuild kit, and go from there....or buy a complete motor. If I buy a block, does it matter what year it is? Does anyone know of any good deals on any of the above. I would really like to keep my budget under $1500 if possible. Thanks in advance.

Freeze damage from not winterizing properly or at all.
You need a new block at minimum. No repairing that.

New valves too by the looks of the runners, I wouldn't bother with a rebuild just buy a crate motor at least a long block and you'll be way ahead.

I would always assume the worst anytime someone says it's just a blown head gasket. Junk the block.Buying a longblock is probably your best bet if you look around you should be able to find some deals. If you just want the block I got one from a place I found on ebay for 150 bored and cleaned...Leo

Nevermind the crate motor unless you have money to burn. Rebuilding an SB Chevy is like falling off a log if you have the smallest amount of mechanical ability. You can borrow the specialty tools from AutoBone
The heads might be ok. Have a machine shop check them(costs very little)
If the heads are good you can check the auto salvage yards for a good 5.7 block and transfer your parts to it. If you need help just PM me. I've been there and done that loooonngg ago.
Also a haynes manual from AutoBone for an 86 Chevy truck will give you lot's of usefull info on how to dissassemble and reassemble that engine. It's mostly the same as far as the engine is concerned

I also just bought a boat with a cracked block, but mine has a harder to find antique straight six, I found one on gregslist for $100 and its shaping up nice.

There is a process that's mostly simple to convert automobile engines for marine use.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

1st thing you gotta do is to Resize your picture,+ edit your post so it can be read without side-scrolling,...
Otherwise, you'll get little to No responces in the forums...
Nobody likes to have to side-scroll to read....
I think about 480px is about the Best size to post...

With a $1500.00 budget,... I hope the manifolds were drained,.. They could be the budget buster...

I think I see some Black paint,... Is this a Mercruiser powered Yacht,..??

If so,...
Wander up to the Adults Only section at the top of this forum,...
You'll find the Factory Service Manuals available there,... Download yourself a copy of the 1s you need,...

Opps is that a 5.0 or a 5.7 or other? If it were a 5.0 and you were a lot closer to ATL Ga I have a block and heads I would give you for 0

Re: Cracked Block!!!!now what???

Thanks guys for the quick responses. I think I'm going to look for a block and do a rebuild. I've done a few engines before, so it shouldnt be to hard. I'll try to resize those pics , as soon as I learn how to......that might be harder for then rebuilding that engine:). Any ideas on parts suppliers with good prices? And some good components? Thanks

Re: Cracked Block!!!!now what???

Thank you guys for the advice. I found a '94 block today for $200, honed, with new bearings and rings and two rebuilt heads, from an older gentleman that intended it for his truck. I'm going to put my cam in it and ss valves. The only problem is that the block isn't drilled for a mechanical fuel pump. I'm wondering if i should machine them in myself (I'm a machinist) or convert to electric fuel pump. Anyone have any experience or ideas with a carbureted motor with electric fuel pump? thanks again
