I've got a cracked block (5.7L OMC) and was told that i could fill the water passage with concrete and not replace the block. Has anyone done this or seen it done? Would like some input. Thanks

Re: Cracked block

HaHa to above, but what you probebly heard was using Hard Blok. No, this will not fix a cracked block. Hard Blok is made for racing engines and when poured in the water jackets it hardenes and makes the block stronger. You can have a 1/4 fill 1/2 fill and so on block The more fill the less cooling the engine will receive.

Time for a new block.

Re: Cracked block

And just how is cooling water supposed to flow through a block that has been stuffed with concrete? The only advantage I can see in doing that is it would add some weight to the engine. Since this topic comes up so often I will bring up a tip that can work SOMETIMES. If the crack is in an area of the block that is clear of obstructions, meaning there are no brackets, casting ridges, etc in the area and the area is relatively flat, you can drill a small hole at each end of the crack to prevent it from moving further. You then make a stainless or aluminum patch that covers the crack by about 3/4 inch all around. Drill holes in the plate at about one inch intervals around the plate. Then drill and tap the block to accept the plate. Dress the surface of the block to make it as smooth as possible. Add sealer to both sides of the gasket and the threads of the cap screws. Bolt the plate over the crack and away you go. How do I know that works. I've done it. Somewhere in Wisconsin is a tractor that had a hole the size of ones fist where a rod came through. My Dad made that repair in his shop years ago. I've done it myself on an outboard.

Re: Cracked block

Now thats alittle ingenuitiy!! It may not be what the book says...but it works.
I started the thread over something I was told by an old mechanic that I'm sure has seen alot of stuff that people will say is crap, but I'm sure "works".

Re: Cracked block

It will just flow ove rhte parts not filled. My 383 in my car is a 1/4 fill block. Not once have I ever had cooling issues. Going on 5 years now. I strengthened the bottom so that I could run a splayed 4 bolt main setup.. Block was orig a 2 bolt. Had to have a strong block for a ProCharger.

Thanks, I'll probably spend the money to get a rebuilt/remanufactured engine instead of the alternative. I'm just throw'in out there the talk. I hope Rapido does a good engine because so far they have the best price and review.

I'm sure the old mechanic meant well, but as you have concluded, it's time for a new block.
