Cracked Block?

I have a 3.0 mercrusier and i hooked up a water hose to the motor and watched water pouring out my dip stick tube. Would that be a cracked block?
I have not pulled the head off yet.

That is a seriously cracked block.

Thanks Don thats what i thought. I have an older 3.0 liter its a 1977 and this one that is cracked is an 1985. The exhaust riser are different. Any idea what i will have to do to swap engines? And mt cherry picker wont go high enough, what other ways is there to remove the motor.

Ayuh,...... Swap the Manifolds between them.....

Keep taking it Apart til you,+ some Help can lift it out.....

Thanks Bond-O i will tear the busted one down, So the manifolds will interchange between the two motors without having to change heads? One is early model and the other is mid model.

If the block is cracked, you can bet the manifold is too.

Do i have to remove the stern drive to remove the motor?

yes.. and if you got yourself a tree nearby that you can get under you can use a hoist and pull it out..

or you can build an a-frame outta some lumber.. or do like bondo says and tear it down and just lift it out..

I got the motor stripped down to the block i cannot find any cracks in the head, manifold or top of the block. There is water on pistons 2 and 3. I guess i can try filling the block water jacket and see if water runs out of the oil pan. Would a blown head gasket cause the oil pan to fill with water with a water hose connected to the engine and not running?

I had the water hose connected to the same place the seawater hose connects by the tstat housing at the head. It filled the oil pan full of water and was running out the dip stick tube. I just bought the boat and the guy told me it did not run and did not know what was wrong.

"Exactly" the same place the seawater hose connects or near it? "On" thermostat housing or "by" it? Can you post a pic? How quickly did it fill with water?

uhm... your supposed to put "muffs" on the lower unit to feed the engine with water.....
Take some pictures and show us where and how you hooked up a hose...

Come on guys there is only one place on a 3 liter merc that has the seawater hose connected to the engine. If a motor does not run it is useless to hook muffs up. I wanted to see if water was running out of a crack in the block, head or manifold. It filled up the oil pan in less then 2 minutes and was running out the dip stick tube.

My Guess is,....
There's a Large Crack, on the Inside of the block, Opposite the Drainplug on the Outside.....

Well Bond-O i agree, Just got done filling the water jack on the block and it drains down and water comes out of the distrubutor hole. Ok i am now 100% sure its cracked. My head and manifold look fine. I am going to switch motors. I am assuming that i will have to have an alignment tool when i swap motors, is this correct? And anyone around Acworth Ga that has one? I guess my next project is to figure out how to get my good motor out without taking it apart. Are you sure they manifolds are interchangable between a 1977 and 1985 3.0 merc? Or is the exhaust tube interchangable between the transom plates.

Thanks for every ones help so far and i know i will have a bunch more problems during the swap. I will be doing this by myself. My buddy wants free use of the boat anytime he wants it to help me change motors so i declined his offer, need a better class of friends.

I never have dealt with a cracked block before so i just wanted to make sure that was the problem, I inspected the head and manifold and dont see anything like a fisser or crack, how should i inspect or test to be sure? I am still foggy on the exhaust riser between the two motors, the 1985 has an two piece and the 1977 is one piece, can a wooden dowel be used as an alignment tool?

And like I said in post #6, you can bet the manifold is cracked to.
Want to bet a new block and manifold on the head being good?
