I noticed yesterday that I had a crack on both sides of my 97' Mercury 40HP carrier assembly in from of the propeller. From what I see this is what holds all the seals and bearings around the propeller shaft ( PN 19291A 3 $136.25 ). I am not sure if this was something that happend over time or from the sand bar I hit yesterday at the lake and tried to reverse off of. Regardless I am curious to know if this is an easy repair along with the seal kit ( PN 823547A 2 $58.35 ). The local Tracker dealers wants $800.00 to do this repair but from the diagram it looks farly simple. Any feedback would GREATLY be appreciated.

It won't hurt to pull the 2 retaining screws and have a look.I think (but hope you don't have) internal damage has occurred.Maybe a broken pinion gear ?

Get yourself a good manual. Also, you are going to need some special tools for both the teardown and the rebuild. See if you can't find someone local that you can rent these tools from.

If the sandbar is indeed what caused this, you probably should at least do an inspection of all of the lower unit components.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I do have a SELOC manual but it does not cover this part of the lower unit for some reason. I will take pics later this weekend and post them and see if perhaps I am not just overreacting. The motor runs fine it's just that I noticed the cracks so i think I am fine mechanically - so far. With the colder weather the boat is stuck in the driveway so I am not going through withdraws yet but would like to get this taken care of nevertheless.

Sorry for the delay in getting back but I took some pics and took them to the local Mercury dealer and the service guys told me that the crack was normal and "non-life threatening". I have had computer issues and am unable to my pics off of my camera to my computer but that's another issue. As soon as that issue is resolved I will post the pics so you guys know what I was referring to and hopefully avoid any future headaches.
