Evinrude 1989 90HP ( 4 coils replaced 1 years ago)

Went out last weekend and the coil where find before outing, didn't notice anything unusual as how the engine was running (except that was the first time it broke the 40mph mark, usually run 38/39mph at wot ).

As I was back home I pop up the cover to check if everything was in order and found the 2 starboard coils were cracked.

The trip was 30 miles mostly done in the 10-20mph range as the gulf was a little bumpy for our 17', and a lot off/on as we were looking for fish.

Just wondering what could have cause that to happen.

Re: Cracked Coil

From where one of the cracks show, it appears that overtightening the mounting screws may have caused the cracks (Top picture.). Can't anything in the lower picture bc the focus is not too good, but may be the same issue.

That was one of my thought too... (manual does say 48/96 inch/lb, and was in the lower of that range)
