Cracked intake manifold

1982 mercruiser 5.7 litre, raw water cooled. I noticed the temp gauge was not working, went to change the sender unit and noticed a small crack in the manifold here, small amount of water was present as well. A mechanic told me I could get by with marine tex as a repair here. Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Tommays,<br /><br />The housing is fine, the crack is actually on the intake manifold about three inches away from the sender unit, definitely a corrosion issue, looking at it it's probably been there awhile, I just bought this boat, just wondering if anyone fixed this in lieu of swapping out the manifold.

Do the weld job with the manifold alone on the work bench. You do not need scale dropping off and welding balls moving around the pump impellor or catching in the thermostat. I agree with Tom, a simple hole is no loss in this case.

In case anyone cares the JB weld worked great, I salvaged the intake manifold, according to merc manuals, about seven pounds of pressure run throught the intake for a raw water cooled motor, marine tex is indicated through 30 gph, my first experience with it but great stuff, highly recommend it.

Glad it worked...but those intakes are a dime a dozen (ok, not that cheap, but close) and very little effort is required to swap one out.<br />I'd have changed the intake.<br />Especially sine from your Long Island sig I would guess there is salt water involved.
