Im looking at buying the following boat:
boat1.jpg

But there is a problem with the outdrive and I dont know how big of a deal it is. I guess he hit a rock or something and part of it is broken off and the rest is a little bent. I painted in red the part that is now missing:

How big of a deal is this? Does it need to be repaired? If I would like to get it repaired, how costly would it be? $100? $600? more?

The Tip of the Skeg is Incidental......
Other than Looks,... You'll Never Know it's Gone...............
Just Bang it Straight, with 2 hammers......

Looks like a Great Boat........

Well,..............Except for the Ugly Old OMC........... :D
That Drive has been Out of Production,... Almost since the day it was New..............

I could be wrong, but isn't that the Volvo Penta SX Drive? If so, no worries about the piece of the skeg missing, so is mine.... :D

Belchy

That smallof a piece should have no ill effects at all. If the cosmetics bother you, you can take it in and have a new piece welded on. Lots of prop shops do this. You could also put on a skeg guard. 100-200 tops for either repair method.

BTW-isn't that a Volvo Penta drive?

Yes, its a "4.3GL Cobra SX Volvo Penta" Supposidly has 190HP which I think should be more than enough for waterskiing and wakeboarding. Glad to hear that it shouldnt be much of a problem. Judging by your responses, the fact that part of it is a little bent also shouldnt be a problem, right? I didnt even notice it was bent until i realized a peice of it was broken off and looked more closely...

Are the volvo penta's any good? I always though the engine was one brand and the outdrive a different brand? How does that work?

Re: cracked outdrive

while it is probably nothing, i would still want a full water test before purchase. make sure it runs true, no excessive vibration, and water isn't leaking through the drive into the bilge.

good luck-

Re: cracked outdrive

I hope u have plenty of insurance running that drive with the prop attached. If some kid walks into it he could lose a leg, or worse. Do some kid a favor & run it without the prop. I'm not trying to be a wise guy but, it just amazes me why folks do some things. Wise up.

Good info sea wolf-- thanks.

I should note that the pictures above were not taken by myself rather e-mailed to me by the seller. I'll be sure not to run the prop like that.

Forget trying to hammer it out yourself. That aloy, while strong, is quite brittle and you could easily break off a lot more.

Missing that little piece should not be a factor in your decision though you need not tell the seller that.

For someone who comes so highly regarded on matters marine, you sure don't read that well. Look on the trim cylinder and read with me: "V O L V O P E N T A". Related to OMC? Distantly. IS it an OMC? Not a chance in hell.
