The previous owner of the craigcat that I bought had installed stainless steel Marine quality bolts and stainless steel Marine quality rods that he threaded himself craigcat claims that if you don't use their kit it my damage the boat. is that true and do metal rods require a plastic sleeve? Should I worry about this ?

Re: craigcat replacement ss bolts

I wish that all boat manufacturers and trailer manufacturers as well, used stainless steel hardware in their boats and trailers. I have rebuilt a few trolling motors now as well, mostly older versions, and the rusted bolts and hardware is so rusted that they are near useless and most have to be cut off. I replace everything with stainless steel even making some of the stainless steel replacement parts on a lathe... You would think it would be a great selling issue to market their products over their competition.

Craigcat replacement bolts and rods are used to hold the deck to the pontoons. In the past they were nylon. the previous owner used marine grade stainless steel rods and bolts. Craig had claims if you don't use theirs it may cause damage to the pontoons.does anybody owning a craigcat agree with this ?

Stainless steel is just that, it stains less. It's not stain proof.

Depending on a number of factors, water composition, dampness, etc. a large number of stainless alloys will "rust' and leave "rust spots" on anything it touches. It's pretty common to see these stains on the mounting points of bow rails, cleats etc. I used nothing but 316 (marine) stainless steel on my boat.

Plastic isolators....again, depending a number of factors, water composition, dampness, materials involved, corrosion via dissimilar materials is a distinct possibility in a high percentage of "marine" applications. The situation would have to be evaluated before the determination could be made
