This was the post:

1961 5/1 2 HORSEPOWER MOTOR FOR SALE - $350

I have got a 1961 5/1 2 horsepower boat motor for sale this motor run's great. it is a Johnson motor and has the short shaft and is great for the river it will push two people in a 14 or 16 john boat with no problem. i do not have a gas tank for it. and i do have a CLEAR title.

-----------------------------------------------------
The pictures attached were also on the post. Anyone else notice that:

1. How do you know the motor "run's great" without a fuel tank to run it?

Answer from poster: It ran great when I ran it on the boat....so there's no reason why it doesn't still run great.

My question: How long ago was that?

Answer: ABOUT four or five years ago.

2. (This is the one that made me even ask as I wanted to see if he was a scammer or just ignorant) That motor was most likely manufactured in 1958 judging by the holiday bronze and cowling with the missing front emblem.

Poster: Oh, I'm sure it's right, you must be mistaken. The title says 1961.

Question: Did you compare the numbers on the title to the numbers on the motor??

Answer: What for?

Not that I was interested in this motor and DEFINITELY NOT FOR $350, but I am just so often amazed by the idiots on craigslist that are looking to scam someone or don't know a thing about what they are trying to sell.

That one probably wasn't a scammer - just clueless.

Best part was when he then accused me of trying to scam him just to get the motor cheaper!!!! Don't think I'd give him $50 for it in that shape!!! People just amaze me sometimes. LOL:D

You get all kinds on CL. There are the "ship it to me" scammers, the ones trying to sell junk at high prices, the uninformed and a few nice people.

I think you might be treating your guy a little harshly. He really sounds to me like he just has no idea how many of those old motors are kicking around and are still in usable shape. I think a lot of them also try to equate the value of what they have, to the insane prices that new motors go for. In their minds, $350 for an ancient 5.5hp motor is fair, because a new one costs $1,500 - $2,000.

I've sold a few things on CL and I've bought a few. As long as you are careful, it can be OK.

Cool old motor. It would make a nice restore project, but not for $350 I would be lucky to get that out of one that is restored, truthfully.

Bought and sold a lot of things on Craig's list. At least you get to see what you are buying, unlike e-bay.

Hello
My first time posting and am totally ignorant about boats, motors and their values. I'm going to look at a 14' aluminum boat with an 18hp Johnson tomorrow. Guy had it listed for $825 but has come down to $700. Assuming it floats and the motor is in decent shape, is that a reasonable price? Thanks.

It's a '58 alright and will need a pressure tank. Not too common. $350 is too high.

Alsdad, you should start a new thread.
