Crank Case cover

I have a 1989 merc 4.3 V6. I found water in my oil and found no cracks in the head or the valley or the intake mani. Could this be the culprit? I did replace the water pump last year which was pretty bad. Can I buy a crank cover at auto zone or pep boys to fit my merc. Is it cheaper and does the auto engine have the seal around the crank shaft hole?

Ayuh,... That's known as a Timing Cover....
It keeps oil in the motor, not water out...
It's not yer problem...

It's also the same part used on automotive motors...

Ayuh,... So long as it's the Right 1, yes...

Btw,... A good coating of Rustoleum otta slow it's rusting away...

Bondo, Got the new one and it is nice and shinny but there is no timing mark tab. How was the old one attached. Can I just drill them out and transfer the holes to the new part then pop rivit them in?

Ayuh,... Then it ain't the Right 1...
The timing tab is welded to the cover...

you can purchase a timing tab that bolts to the cover with the existing bolts.

Squad: Although that timing cover is quite rusty, it doesn't look like it rusted all the way through, letting water get into your crankcase from a leaky water circulation pump. In other words, I'm fairly certain you still have a problem elsewhere which allowed your water and oil to mix. Pull your plugs and check the cylinders. Are any ofr the plugs "steam-cleaned"? Check your manifolds and risers. You need to find the leak. Hy

Going on Squab's previous threads,...

I'm bettin' it's cracked along the inside of the block, just behind the drain plugs....
He don't wanta pull the motor though...
