Re: crank wont turn

Usually cracked exh.mans/risers. or bad seal between mans. and risers.

Bad manifolds or risers or failed riser gasket. Leaky valves and a lot of idling, Blown head gasket, etc.
If you were in salt water, speed of getting the water out of the cylinders is absolutly necessary.
Go check it NOW.
If there was water, crank the engine with the plugs out, get it dried out and run the engine.
If it's still in the water, remove the impeller and run the engine for a about 15 seconds without water. Just to dry out the cylinders. Then get the boat out of the water to do the troubleshooting.

Hydro-lock story,My 93 502 efi mag and I were out 4 a cruze one day when I shut her down to just chill out in dee rivah 4 awhile when,as I tryed to restart,I was hydro-locked!! Bummer! No previous warning,no problems! It was gittin dark,20 miles from port and impatience insued so,I kept tryin to bump-crank it hopin the water wood leave,NOPE! Broke a tooth!Called a friend, got back to port 4 hrs.later.Next day pulled off the STAINLESS STEEL merc risers.and decided the man.mating surface was corroded too narrow to seal to the risers properly so I replaced the mans.,new riser gaskets (risers looked like new)and installed the risers.FIXED!?? Turned the crcnk to a good spot and fired it up Great!Went to our overnite hole, tyed up to buddys, shut her off,and stayed fer the nite.Next am,Hydro-locked!Pulled plugs, cleared cylinders, reassembled and off we went.Back to the drawin board!Pulled the engine, replaced the ring gear(and starter,I broke that on the LAST attempt to start it!)And got the risers pressure tested, fine!Whats wrong!Only gets intrusion on one side!I fixed it butt what did I do!!HUH!It was the damn s.s.riser!

Re: crank wont turn

Being fresh water you should be ok waiting.
It also may not be water causing your problem.
A bad starter, engine problems, drive problems are all possibilities. Try to turn the engine by hand with the plugs out.
If you can't turn the engine with the plugs out, pull the upper gear box off the drive and try it.
I have also seen the bearings in the engine bellhousing lock up and prevent the engine from turning.

Re: crank wont turn

thanks don..the drive seems ok however i cant rule it out just yet.. the starter is brand new and the engine was running very sweet so thats why im so stumped !! but i have a suspicion that one of the riser gaskets may not have sealed properly so will double check that thanks again..
