I'm doing my first engine rebuild -- a 1991 Johnson 40 horse. I'm well along in the process of putting it back together. I'm at stage of attaching the crankcase head, but feel something may not be right.

This crankcase head houses two seals: the lower crankshaft seal and one that must seal the driveshaft. This crankcase head bolts across a surface formed by the two halves of the crankcase. However, that surface is not perfectly smooth. There is a small edge between the two halves. A taper pin determines the alignment of the two halves and that is in. I'm suppose to apply a gasket sealer to the surface but will that deal with the edge? The lower main bearing is nearby so I believe this area is subject to compression and decompression as the engine runs.

I'd appreciate any advice before proceeding further. Thanks.
