Crankshaft Pulley, harmonic balancer problem?

I just got a new boat w/ a 1987 3.0 Mercruiser with a crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer that I can pretty much pull off with my hand. What is involved in getting this replaced? Is there something that may have caused this? I read that it may be a bent propshaft? Also should I leave this job to a mechanic, or is it pretty easy to replace?

What do you mean you can pull it off by hand? The harmonic balancer should be held on by a large bolt through the middle held onto the end of the crankshaft. If the outer ring of the balancer is loose this is because sometimes the balancer is a 2 piece with a rubber vibration dampner in between the rings. (Some balancers are solid - 1 pc. units) Ifthis rubber deteriates enough over time the balancer can seperate. The fix is a new balancer. Ususally you need to buy or rent a special tool to pull the balancer off the snub of the crankshaft. and no I dont really think that this would cause or be caused by a bent propshaft.

It must of been the two piece type. The middle section looks all in tack and the outer section is all broken up. Any idea on the cost of a new balancer?

If you due a search on the top page on 3.0 harmonic balancer you get a LOT of info

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/13/13covr2.pdf

while not your exact manual this will show you whats involved

The 3.0 crank is not threaded to allow it to be pulled back on which is the problem as beating in on will dammage the crank thrust bearings

The pros here just pull the motor so it can be pressed on without dammage as the front motor mount is in the way of doing anything

tommays
