I was wondering if anyone would have any ideas on why my crankshaft pulley sometimes doesn't rotate or move?
I hear a squeal coming from either the water circulating pump/power steering, then the engine temp starts to rise.
Any help would be great.
Thanks
OMC 460/7.5

Impossible.
The crank pulley is bolted to the harmonic balancer which is bolted to the crank.
If the engine is running it all rotates.
Period.
No arguing.
Now, are you trying to say the pulley on the water circulation pump stops rotating?

Re: Crankshaft pulley

The belt appears to have slipped on the water pump, and it is not turning as fast as normal.
It will go in a very slow revolution then speed up,when this happens the temp gauge will start going back to normal.
I quess my eyes were thought that the crankshaft pulley was not turning. The smell of the belt burning I assumed coming from there.

Bob, how tight is your belt? It could slip if it isn't tight enough.

One of two things... Your water pump is toast, or the belt is'nt tightend properly...

As snapperbait said:
1. Tighten belt (why not put a new one on while you are screwing with it? I would if it had been slipping that much)
2. Not fixed? Install a new MARINE circulation pump.
