Background.

1972 Evinrude 65 hp Electric shift.

Yesterday was the first time I had taken it out.

I adjusted the carbs a little. Changed the plugs and compression checked out great.

I had run it in a barrell but had never put it in gear our out of gear (didn't want to run the motor without a load on it).

I had to take the prop off the motor to fit it in my barrell so I apparently didn't know that it was stuck in gear.

I did not think to check the lu oil. So I get it to the dock and launch yesterday it wouldn't come out of gear I did a trial run and everything is great. Planes my boat VERY nicely, and towed the pontoon in with it.

Today I took my control apart cleaned all the switch contacts, I also took my battery with test leads and one directly to ground and the other hot to the blue wire coming out of the midsection I can hear it click when I put voltage on it. The green wire clicks with voltage on it, and the both click with hot put directly on them (simulating reverse).

I didn't get a chance to rehook up my controls to see if cleaning the contacts help.

I changed the lower unit oil and it is white no metal shavings but indicating water intrusion.

I discovered when I pulled the drain plugs there were no gaskets on them. Could this be the cause of the water intrusion or should I look elsewhere and how would I know where to look?

Is there anyway to tell without dropping the lower unit? Should I just buy a seal kit and reseal the whole thing?

Some drain plugs have O Rings for seals, most have the nylon washers. Perhaps the washers are jammed in the lower unit drain and oil level holes. If no seals at all, therein lies the water entrance.

Forward gear is the spring loaded default on that unit. Gearcase lube must be what is called Preminum Blend, also known as Type C, available at your dealership.

Checking for a leakage point...... Drain gearcase, apply 7 to 12 psi of air to either the drain or oil level hole. The leak should be found either by sight or sound... or both.

Thank you Joe.

There were no o-rings or nylon washers on the drain plugs.

The lower unit was full just looked like milk draining out of the lower.

I did change it with premium blend.

7to 12 psi after draining lower unit oil correct?

Just remember, the mtr has to be running or d/s turning for this mtr to shift.

7to 12 psi after draining lower unit oil is correct. Higher pressure has a tendency to force a faulty seal shut which provides a false reading.
