Crappie Condo's....Anyone use them?

Just curious...

Up here in Minnesota.....there is enough weeds,rock piles,pencil reeds,docks,trees...etc to not warrant dropping this kind of structure in our waters...but I have heard of others down in the southern states that do use make and use these on a regular basis.I think their kind of cool to say the least.

They would probably make a great "honeyhole" if you were to set these on a dropoff or creek channel or anywhere else that does'nt have natural structure....so....What do you all think?

yep one of the state lakes in va has a few and if u know where thay are u can catch some good fish there

They are great for barren body of water such as pond which is usually void of cover and structure. The problem with placing artificial cover in public water are #1: it's prohibited by the DNR unless given permission (at least around here). #2 you have to place it in deep water so that people won't easily find them. It need to be isolated for it to works well but being isolated it will stick out like a sore thumb. With today electronics and especially side scan graphs, they will find it pretty quick. I just moved into a place with a large retention pond and I might build some. The pond has lot of vegetation but I'm going to put them in to give the fish another option.

that looks pretty neat but a cedar or xmas tree tied to a cinder block is what gets dumped the most around here,abought got a hernia trying to pull the anchor up last weekend,1- 5' cedar tree & a block out of 30' of water along with the 15lbs anchor was rough ,mike243

Thats what they do around here as well, Cement block and an old Xmas tree..
I like the Condo's though because theres less chance of snagging the pipe than the tree branches.

A body of mine has some that he made out of pvc pipe, so he wasn't getting his jigs snapped up all the time. They must work, he alway comes back with a mess of crappie in a short time. I have a lake I'd like to put some in, its got lots of crappie, but almost no structure away from the shoreline. I'm just waiting to find a bunch of free pvc pipe somewhere!

Should be able to find some scraps around a construction site, etc...

If theres crappie and no structure in your lake they need some structure of some kind. Like I said your old Xmas tree works great BUT you will snag it and it will collect hooks and jigs !!..

Check this out.A pretty cool video to show you various ways of building condo's.....and probably the cheapest way.Just go to your local lumber mill and ask away.Most have scrap that they give away for free.
