Re: Crazy Prop Performance - need suggestions

In my best Foghorn Leghorn, "that was a joke son" . . . I kind of sell fuel for a living, but more like sell engines, more precisely fuel systems. Mouse Milk and I are old friends, and we have agreed to disagree ;)

Nice! ;) Always was a fan of Foghorn Leghorn!

If you could get the bow up, tabs would help you control it. I could see you need them when you are low on fuel, but bow mounted tanks do in fact make this stuff harder.

No, I don't have tabs. I have enough trouble getting the bow UP as it is...I don't know why I would want tabs. Its a very bow-heavy boat. The fuel tank is up there, the cooler is up there, the anchor is up there, and the kids are always up there. That poor slip was only with the 21" prop...not with the smaller 23" prop. The Advantage III is supposed to have bigger blades, and 0.25" larger diameter than the 23"...but the 23" hooked up waaaaaay better.

I think I need a 23" that is know to spin a bit faster than the others, and have great bow lift...at least that is where logic and research are taking me now. Right now the Tempest Plus seems to be the next logical choice...but I am open to suggestions!

That even furthers the need for a strong overall lifting prop...Tabs always aid in heavy boats You need to be dialed in somehwat close prior to labbing..Labbing is just blade thinning and cupping so you can gain more rpm and hopefully grip..If you gain 200-300 rpm from a lab job thats good...Gain 400-500 you had the wrong prop from the start

Ohh im gonna lecture a bit here..people in the bow during high speed runs...Not good....But thats a opinion...Have fun i am serious abot the 4 blade..

Hmm ok heres a pic showing a baypro lifting...the boats 19' running at about 3500 lbs...200hp 4.3..8' beam...Take notice the of the foot print its about 3' wide and the wash is going straight out the back..not the side's..The slip show 5% ..a 3 blade only gets 9%

I NEVER do high speed runs with my kids in the bow...and will only very rarely do high speed runs with the kids on board anyways, and the conditions have to be PERFECT. I need the bow lift at cruising speeds to keep from having the second chine dig in and roll us hard to port.

:D I was just digging a bit...

had the 96 212Lwith the same setup as justlakenit, 5.7L with Alpha 1 and it came with a 19 alluminum from the factory. I tried several different props and actually got the best performance out of a 20 SS Turbo. A close friend has the 97 212L with 454 MPI and Bravo 1 and his came with the 23 SS Mercury.

Not trying to sell you a prop, but if you try your current 23 prop and are unhappy I have a like new 23 Mercury Mirage Plus prop for sale ($225). You would be welcome to try it first. I think you will find that 23 is your prop. Even with a dinged up prop you should be getting more RPM than 4150 with the 454. I am assuming you have the MPI version and it is not carb. I believe your engine is supposed to be around 4900 RPM at WOT, will say on top of the engine cover.

Yup, I already knew that about the Turbo/Stiletto.
No, I have the carbed version. Max RPM is 4600 if I remember correctly.

What Mercury Prop did your close friend have? Guessing it was the M+.

From everything I have read, while there is an improvement in efficiency and starting, there was no power increase for MPI in 1997 over the carbed version. I could be totally off base there though.

I think 4900 RPM max is for the MAG version of this engine...which I do not have. :(

Took her out the other day...finally just myself and half a tank of fuel...

light chop, and moderate winds.

59.3 mph @ 4250 rpm

only 6% slip? Is that too little? Read something about that being hard on a drive? Only 0.7 mph away from my 60 mph goal...bet a labbed M+ could get me there.

Good on ya mate!! Which prop was that? I don't recall where you ended up and not sure I can tell from the previous posts.

The drive doesn't know if it has any slip. It doesn't care. WOT is WOT as long as you are in the proper range. If you recall who said that, he/she needs a noogie while you say McFlyyyyy with a sarcastic tone . . . :D

Sorry, this run was with the 23" Stiletto.
Now...do I pay to have this prop labbed to get a bit more speed / rpm, or do I have the Mirage+ 23" I have labbed?
Either way, I am going to be jazzed to get that done this spring and see if I can break that 60mph mark.
Even with the 23" Stiletto I still have almost 400 rpm more to play with.

I still stand behind what I posted a year ago... the M+ is one of the fastest props around and they respond well to a quality lab job. I have a hard time believing you are better off with a Stiletto, but I could be wrong.

Your at the point now where labbing the stiletto might make sense...BB blades would be able to answer that...Thats a 427 chev or ford...How big is the carb????...600...700....850....those old big blocks were severly restricked as to air intake

Actually, it is a 454.
Mostly the restriction is in the tiny ports in the heads...and the exhaust manifold.
There are a few things I could do to up the hp, but nothing major to be gained without new heads.
