i removed the engine oil cap and noticed a creamy (water-oil) residue on the cap. Is there potential problem here? temp of engine never exceeds 140f. changed oil a couple of weeks ago, no noticeable water in oil. 1998 omc 4.3 liter GM. i would appreciate any suggestions.

Sounds like condensation. What kind of running do you do? Extended idle, normal cruise ect? Sounds like it may be running a touch cold. What t-stat? What oil?

Good luck!

There is definitely water in the oil and its sounds like a leak. Is it an I/O? Boat manufacture? I have a Regal with 4.3s. The flapper valve was installed incorrectly (backwards) and as result the long block has to be rebuilt.

Also what does the oil look like on the stick. If this oil looks fine then you most likly do not have a problem. But to make sure change the oil one more time and pay real close attention to it. After doing this whip the oil cap off and run in the yard for a hour or so. That should tell you if you ahve a real problem

Make sure your exhaust manifolds / risers are OK. If you see this problem again thats my guess...
