Creating adjustable bunks

The trailer that came with my boat is not right for the boat. It is more than solid enough and heavy enough. The only problem is that it has non-adjustble or moveable bunks. The one outer bunk sets right on the port strake. It needs to be moved in or out only a couple of inches. Short of cutting and rewelding (which I will do if I have to) does anyone have any ideas for making these adjustable? I will try to post pictures when I get some.

Thanks

Re: Creating adjustable bunks

Got any pics?

I had one trailer that came with my Starcraft that had welded on bunk supports, (still does), but they hit the hull along two strakes, the boat would always sit off to one side or the other when loaded. The simplest fix was to replace the two 8' long 2x4 bunks with a 2x6 bunk which fit the same bunk brackets. This effectively made the contact are on the hull a few inches narrower since the bunks were angled inward slightly. This solved the problem and also gave me an extra inch or two of much needed clearance at the outdrive.

you've got a problem, hate those trailers. 1st it is ungalvanized steel, 2nd welded. temp fix, is to get a welder to move the bunk. permanent fix is to get a galvanized or aluminum trailer. if you are in salt water, i give that trailer 5 years, unless you maintain it very well.

Not in Saltwater nor will I ever be with this boat. I own 3 steel trailers and they are all 15 - 25 years old. Every few years a little wirebrushing, sandblasting and touch up paint no problem. I'll take your bet...

Re: Creating adjustable bunks

I am thinking that if I weld a bigger plate to the top of the current post and weld in some gussets then place the bunk boards farther out I should be good. Any opinions on that? Will that be strong enough?

Thanks

Do you think that they would be strong enough with the gussets?

Thanks
