Re: Credit Card, new ?'s

Trying to figure out a budget to get these loan sharks paid off.

I have about 5 other cards with a low balance. As a rule we have been doubling the min payment. Now with the major card it is hard to make a double or plus payment.

Would it be best to pay down and off the 5 smaller cards first so that I can use that money to slam on the major card with the big balance. If I pay just the min paymt with maybe 25 dollars more on the paymt, I can pay off those smaller amounts easily in 6 months.

I hope I worded this right. Thanks

there are plenty out there, but here's a very simple calculator to use.

http://www.dyn-web.com/javascript/calcs/cc_calc.html

i suggest everyone checks it out, you'll be surprised how long it takes to pay off your debt, especially if you are only paying the minimum due.

i only use a credit card when i travel. i have a $2000 balance on one. if i only paid the minimum amount each month- $20 - it would take me 213 months!

Re: Credit Card, new ?'s

Hi Matt, I have a program on my puter that does the same thing. I know the balance doesn't go down when making the min. I just wondering if I did that just for a short time until my other cards are paid off within 6 months. This way the money that I would have been using to pay on all the others would then be used on the large balance. This in turn will cost me more, but with more money to pay at each payment (after the other cards paid off) would accelerate the decline on the balance of my large balance.

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to get something figured out. Thanks

SS,
I'm not sure, but I Think that I'd be using the differences in % rates to my advantage by paying Min.+ Loose Change, on the CCs with the Lowest rates.......And Dumping every Couch Nickle I could find into the Big% acc........
Maybe,... If You're Lucky,... 1 of the other CCs will send you a better trans. offer.........

I've used CCs to buy a couple properties,+ some resaleable things......
Every time I'm going to ring up more than a couple hundred, I've got a Plan to pay it off,.. Pronto....
When I did the Canoe sales thing, I'd ring up several Thousand.....And pay it off in a couple months..Canoes sell Very Well on my lawn.....Credit Limits went Thru the Roof,.. % rates thru the Floor...
With the Big Purchases, I knew I could do a balance transfer to a Much Lower rate within a couple months......$20,000.00 at 3.99% was Cheaper than a Mortgage...And, No Closing Costs...
I Just transfered the bal. to another acc..... 1.99%, No Fee, Till Payed... No time limit.... Free Money ......

I Hope you can get yours sorted out.... It depends on how hard you,+ the family are willing to go.........
Sometimes,.... Ya gotta step back,+ Unload a few replaceable treasures, to get back to profitable times.......Have you considered Trailering this year ??

Good Luck My Friend......... ;)

SS. Get a plan and stick to it. 3 years ago I was looking at 12,000 in C.C. debt. Started sending each one 100.00 amonth which was over the min.payment. Which ever card got paid off, then that 100.00 went to the next card that had the highest interest. Now I'm down to just one card and sending 400.00 amonth. Arter thats paid off then the 400.00 goes towards the principle on the house. My plan is to be debt free by Christmas '05 since I dont ow that much on the house.

Re: Credit Card, new ?'s

Hi people,
My wife and I are fortunate enough not to have any credit cards right now. We once use to have a mastercard acount that always seemed to be at $3000. We sold our 43 ft. sail boat and paid off the mastercard balance about 7 years ago. We are presently considering a american express cash back card which we plan to use only for emergency purposes. One such purpose would be to pay for gas and marina's we might use on a week long cruise, which we would pay american express back fully possibly 2 weeks later on our pay day. My understanding is if you pay back the money used on the card by the due date there is no charge. If anyone has had american express experience I would appreciate any information regarding their charges.
Thanks,
Bill

We have 3 cards. She carries a Mastercard and I carry a Cabela's Visa plus we each have a Chevron card. The bills are paid each month. Paying high interest is a waste of money. Spending more than you make or having more cards than you can keep track of will cause problems. I know how easy it is to get up-side down in debt. Been there.

generally, if you have several credit cards, you want to pay off the highest interest debts first. should save you money in the long run.

but to answer your question, yes, it makes sense. go ahead and get rid of the multiple debts in 6 months, even if it means paying the min on the large debt. you leave yourself one debt to focus on. throw everything you can at it. and stop using the card!

I had a card that I rotated a 3-4K balance on and they raised it from about 6% fixed no-fee to about 19% and said the considered it a long term loan. balance transfered to another card and never went back (mbna, had nothing but trouble with them)

Re: Credit Card, new ?'s

From a Credit Card Collectors View...Keep in mind all Late Charges, Over-the-limit fee's, and finance charges are all waivable if you have a good enough story(depending on the collector). Depending on how Delinquent you are (30 days, 60days, 90 days), your creditor will be able to place you on a Payment plan (for hardships) to lower your interest rate(sometimes down to 0% depending on your situation), and also waive a chunk of fees. Collectors get bonus off of getting you to pay over the phone, or promise an amount that you will be sending in. Here's a few other tips for the heck of it...

DEBT CONSOLIDATION: My recommendation is to goto www.nfcc.com to check to see if there's a non-profit org that will help you but keep in mind, it will show up on your credit report if you choose to goto a debt consolidation program.

SETTLEMENTS: Good way to get rid of a debt that just holds ya back. Normally a collector will be able to go down to 75%, but if your complain enough, you can go as far down as 20% (pay 20% of your total balance) I wouldn't recommend going that far however! Keep in mind, settlements are also a hit to your credit report and also you will get a 1099 tax form at the end of the year to pay tax on the difference that was cleared off. So be carefull that you don't owe the government rather then your creditor(if it's a low settlement payoff), because then you have the government garnishing your tax return if you can't afford to pay them =o.
----------------------------------------------

Also when you call into your credit card company, if your account is in a delq status, you will be forwarded to the collections dept when your really trying to get to cust service. If you want to discuss lowering interest, you can try to work it out with a collector if you show that you cannot pay & are in need of a hardship program (because of getting fired, death in the family etc.) or something major that shows you can't pay your min payment. They will ask personal questions about your bills to document that you are in need of one, so if you told them after paying bills that you have $1200 left at the end of the month, don't count on getting put on the program!!
So instead of putting in your account # when asked on that automated stuff, just hit "0","#" on your phone & that should get you to customer service if you really rather talk to them. but watch out, most cust service will transfer you to collections if they see your account is delq, request a manager at that point if you really want to stay with customer service...

lastly remember...the credit card company would rather get something out of you rather see you account charge off & then they get nothing.... anythings negotiatable

I recommend hardship programs with the company itself or a loan to consolidate all of your debts. Good luck =D

Thanks Danner, I haven't even been a week late over the due date, but still got the delq. penalty. Wife and I got things under control now. I think she has learned that paying on time is cheaper. Thanks again.
