Let me start by saying this site is a unbeliveable tool and this is my first post.

Some history behind my issue before we get into the details. Boat is a 2000 Crownline 202BR with 305 EFI (Throttle body Injection) with a Alpha 1 outdrive with approx 155hours total on it. The boat has been in storage for approx 8 months and was properly winterized(Oil, new filters oil&fuel/water seperator, etc.) and topped off with a full fuel tank with fuel stabilizer.

On it's first maiden voyage of the season which happened to be my first Fathers Day with my 5 month old daughter(her first trip on the boat!!) I expierenced the following frustrating event:

After approx 45+ min of flawless operation during idle to full throttle accel and decell (with a couple of start and stop of the engine in between) we expiernced what I think is a fuel starvation issue.

The boat failed to continously remain idleing or had severe difficulty even starting. I unscrewed the brand new fuel/water seperator filter which was full of fuel after i removed it (good sign) to inspect for blockage with no blockage found. I also nursed an idle along by pouring fuel directly down the throttle bodies and witnessed the follwing phenomenon. As the engine attempted to establish a continous idle the injectors were only dispersing a minimal and interupted amount of fuel. Typically in the past I have witnessed the injectors completly atomizing the fuel in a concentric cone shape this was not the case unfortunatley.
Needless to say we had to be towed back to the boat launch and my Fathers day ended on a frustrating note.
So this leads me to the following questions that I need assistance on from the professionals on here!
1)Do you concur it is a fuel issue?
2)Where shoud l I begin troubleshooting? Note: I have reviewed the following posts and I just want a logical starting place.
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/99/99_07.pdf
http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=015221#000000

3) I have a manual but it does not show a true schematic of the fuel system. I believe there has to be another filter or screen on the output side of the fuel pump to the throttle bodies which may be obstructed or clogged?

4)As a side note the fuel pump does sound strange/differnet now after I have expierenced this issue. It's like it is not priming correctly prior to attempting to start the engine. Typically fuel pumps just give up entirely not jus get weaker all of a sudden don't they?

Any help is greatly appreciated as we have an annnual trip to Table Rock next week end and I want this issue fixed ASAP.
Appreciate everyone's assitance on helping me fix our boat.

Don's test is definately a test that needs to be done along with a fuel pressure test (pressure test guage required). Pressure after low pressure and high pressure pump should be checked. Also check all electrical connections at injectors, fuel pumps & relays, control module, oil pressure switch, throttle position switch and distributor. make sure they are tight and corrosion free (NO GREEN STUFF in connectors).

If you dont find a problem here you need to have it checked by a qualified service tech. It will need to be hooked up to a computer diagnostic tester.

as far as a good schematic, it may be divided up but try this page:

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/collections/index.cfm?fuseaction=serials&colid=04&coldesc=5%2E0L%20EFI%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20GM%20305%2 0V%2D8%201999

If that link doesn't come through right, go to dougrussell.com, do a parts search, Mercruiser, then find your engine on the list (it only has 1998 and 1999 5.0 EFI by the way) after you select the 1999 5.0EFI, it gives you two serial number ranges to select from. Good luck!

I know there are screens right there in the injectors too!

There is a wire mesh screen on the inlet side of the high pressure pump. Occassionally will clog with rust from the screen itself due to water in the fuel. Those high pressure pumps can't stand ANY water sitting in them, they will rust.

Re: Crownline 202BR 305 EFI fuel problem?

Crown line, I had a similar problem with my 2000 Crown line BR this season with the 305 EDI. My problem was from a vapor lock issue. My Crown line wouldn't' start after it heat soaked for an hour or so after running. I now run the bilge blower all the time and let the motor idle for at least 5 min. before sitting her down keeps...... the temp in the motor box cooler. I also try to keep away from any gas with alcohol added to it. Don S. sent me a bulletin from Mercury on this issue, thus using these methods. I replaced my fuel filter water/, electronic fuel pump and lower unit impeller and had the same result until I read the bulletin from Merck.

I had the same issue took over a month of troubleshooting but finally figured it out the dang thing has a check valve that screws into pick up tube out of the top of fuel tank looks like a air hose fitting it starts to stick and very hard to blow through changed it with regular air hose fitting problem solved
