Cruise-A-Day Pressure Tank Two Hose Tank Question

Hi!

I picked up an OMC pressure tank at the swap-meet. It is the newer version 4-gallon....with the "A" embossed next to the primer push-button (plastic). Attached find the drawing of my type of tank.....

I pulled the top apart and found a rusty mess. It cleaned up pretty well.....and all the parts are accounted for with these exceptions: (Each exception has a question.....)

(1) The Pressure Relief Valve (rubber) is there.....but there is no washer or spring underneath it. They are just not there.... Can in operate without these two pieces? (Numbers 44 and 45 in the drawing)

(2) The "Foot Valve".....is missing the filter assembly....the round flat part at the base is just not there..... Aside from not having a filter....will this matter?

Thanks....Chuck

PS: Try as I might....I have not been able to find any high-resolution pictures (or videos) of the R&R of these tanks.....Surely there must be one someplace.....anyone have a link?

I think (don't know) your 44 and 45 are a bigger problem that the lack of a pick up filter. They would act to contain the pressure inside the tank unless it got out of bounds. I suspect they can be bought.

The filter probably extends the tube just a bit to fully reach the bottom. A short hose and weighted filter could replace part or most of that #36. Some hardware store spring and washer can replace 44 and 45 but it needs to be a soft spring as those tanks don't operate under all that much pressure and to much spring would negate the "safety factor".

Put it back together and see if it will pump up and then you will know what you need to find.

Strange indeed. I would imagine the check valve was stuck(at filter),and the previous owner did not know how to properly free it, so simply removed it. I would personally get the missing items. I cannot imagine it would work well at all the way it is, if at all. In fact the pressure relief valve would likely stay open the way it is, not allowing the tank to pressurize.

There are plenty of rusted tanks out there, but good mechanicals. Post a wanted ad at aomci.org, or try the salvage yards.

If you get stuck, PM me.

Ha....the spring and washer were there all along.....just very stuck. I mistook the spring for threads down in there. It's soaking with PB Blaster as I type.

The foot valve is very stuck as well.....I understand that it should "rattle" in there. No rattle....so I need to free it up....or just replace the entire assembly (not cheap).

I can't tell how the filter base is attached....or how the PO managed to remove it so "cleanly". I would never have guess that anything was ever there....

Thanks guys....

Re: Cruise-A-Day Pressure Tank Two Hose Tank Question

Now another question:

The fitting where the "air" hose hooks up is clogged. I can't blow through it at all. I've tried poking a paperclip through it.....no success....

What the heck? Is there a tiny orifice in there? It looks like it opens directly into the chamber directly behind.....but no amount of poking with wires has cleared it out.

I wish I knew what size opening it should be; I don't want to enlarge it out of ignorance.....

Re: Cruise-A-Day Pressure Tank Two Hose Tank Question

I have to say, I cant say I have ever had to remove the screen assembly/check valve from the pick up tube. Not sure if they actually come off, it seems to be pressed in if I had to guess. The check valve should rattle as stated. I soak them in solvent, and insert a thin punch or nail if need be to free them up. You may not even have the check valve??

Is the whole assembly still assembled? If the check valve is stuck as you think, if it is still intact, you will not be able to suck or blow through the air line. If intact and free to operate, you should be able to suck it off its seat, but not blow through it.

vintageoutboard.com has rebuilt kits for your tank. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: Cruise-A-Day Pressure Tank Two Hose Tank Question

Chris; the Foot-Valve tube is still assembled; yes. As you suggest.....the base looks to be pressed on. I don't really know if the valve itself is in the portion that remains or not. Nothing rattles.....and I can't blow through it. Does anything in the picture come apart? From the amount of crud throughout the entire top...I doubt that soaking alone is going to help much.

Looks like I may need to replace the foot-valve tube if I'm going to salvage the tank.

nwcove....I hear ya; I just thought I'd save the thing....since it came my way. I personally have others and don't really even need it.

I can really respect that. Glad to hear you want to save it and not just scrap it. They arent making them anymore after all.

Wth respect to your pic, looks like someone tore the screen housing off. It would tuck into that slot that you see. I would think the check valve would still be in there. Soak it in solvent overnight, then try to stick an awl or punch in to free it up. However, that would mean there is no screen. You should be able to find the whole assembly used for a few bucks. Post a wanted ad, Im sure a local member will help you out.
